Thank you to everyone who answered my last question about getting a new computer for photo and video editing...the suggestions were great, and I will follow them. Now a question about Blu-Ray. My budget keeps increasing, and I have been considering getting a Blu-Ray writer added on. I don't want to spend my money, and six months from now regret not getting the Blu-Ray writer. My last computer did not have a dvd writer, and I always regretted it--and, I chose not to get it and spend the extra money at the time. I will be making slide shows that contain both video and still photos for myself and others, and I wonder if Blu-Ray may become something I would want in the next year or so---or should I wait for the technology to become more common place and spend that money elsewhere??

I feel like Blu-Ray, while an exciting technology, is a little excessive sometimes--do you really have need for a disc with 50GB+ of storage? Besides, most people at the moment don't have a Blu-Ray player, and are not that into hi-def that it will be as big a deal as DVD (also, the movie industry is fast moving towards direct download, but that's another convo).

I could be wrong, but I think there are multi-layer DVD writers (and blank discs) out there that'll give you as much as like 16GB of space on a single disc, plus they're readable on basically any DVD player. Look into that

agreed they aren't widespread enough. Get a dual layer DVD drive and you will be much happier. And they are soooooooooooo much cheaper.

50 gig a disc is great. The less media to be lugging to the safety deposit box the better. However I would wait until the pricing reaches commodity levels on the drives before picking one up. Easy enough to install yourself later when they are 1/10th the cost.

I would suggest waiting. Since it would be very easy to add a BluRay disk later down the road. And it doesn't sound like you need it now.
Just make sure you get a good motherboard that will support the connection the drive uses. I am assuming it's SATA and all the modern board would have it.

Get a DVD for now, and you can always swap it later.

id say wait, just like dvd burners, they were expensive when they just hit the market, give blu ray a cupple months to cool down in price. theyll be cheep soon enough, even so, just put some money aside from your budget and get one later on.
