| I have a Canon 20d cammera /w an 18 - 55 mm lens. I am looking into getting a telephoto lens. The problem is there are so many types and I am on a budget. Are there any suggestions of what type of lense or focus. I am just trying to do my homework before purchasing. If anyone could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it... |

A general purpose budget tele is the 70-300 4-5.6 range. I'm not up on the latest and greatest in the lower price lines, but tamron made one that was very good, optically - APO was in the name. There was a non-APO version for about $50 less but it wasn't nearly as good. Canon makes or has made 3 or 4 lenses in this range and some are good and some are dogs, some have IS and some don't - so I can sympathize with your plethora of choices.

I second that 70-300 choice. If you need a lens to shoot outdoors and want to isolate subjects at a distance, that is a great zoom range, and popular enough that the price will not kill your budget for a year. There are a lot of good used ones around too, because people who find that they get serious about their shooting tend to upgrade to better ones from the entry level ones.

It depends on what you want to photograph.
I had a standard Canon 70-300 (which are about £100 now) and it was pretty good in good light but in lower light it sometimes struggled as I like to photograph motorsport so need fast shutter speeds sometimes.
I upgraded it to the Canon 75-300 IS (about £300 now) and I have to say the IS is simply awesome. I also now have an 100-400L which is an awesome lens but the IS is much better on the 75-300.
If you are going to generally photograph in good light and your budget won't go to £300 then I can recommend the standard canon 70-300, but if your budget can stretch to the 75-300 then I'd go for that every time ... though I've not used any tamron/sigma equivalents ... |

| I recently got a used Tamron 28-300 for $225. I was concerned that a lens with such a wide range might be very soft. I'm sure if I had more expensive lenses to compare it to I might see some difference, but it seems pretty good, especially for the price. It seems at least as good as the canon 75-300 that I traded in toward it. |

You get a lot of bang for your buck with these lens, but I've found it's a bit soft above 200mm, compared to the 70-200 range. It's certainly usable above 200. And you can't beat the price if it's within your budget. And having macro between 200 & 300 is great for bugs since you focus from farther away.
Edit: I was referring to the "DG" version.

Lots of good 70-300mm range lenses for about $150 new. I would say get the Canon 70-200 F4 if you can. Its a great lens you cant go wrong. If more for birds/wildlife look into the sigma 120-400 its a great budget lens too.

double ditto on that one, this lens is incredible, i've just started getting to use mine a whole lot and i have fallen in love.

| Thanks for all the info. I will review all of the lenses that are listed here and if anyone else makes suggestions..... Ya'll have made my decision making process that much easier.. |
