Where can I download music to use for my website? I would like to be able to use several popular songs.. is it possible to obtain a licence to use them this way legally?
Any advice would be great!
Thanks,
Jane

Sorry, I can't help you with that. I immediately close every website that plays music at me, unless it has a very good reason, e.g. it is a music site where you would expect to hear music. |

I HATE it when sites have music that starts automatically. I am hardly ever at my comp and not have music going, it's VERY ANNOYING when sites start playing music (and most of it is crap I wouldn't listen to anyways). So please, if you put music on your site, have it turned off with the option of turning it on.
As far as licensing goes, I doubt you would be able to obtain the rights to any popular songs for any reasonable amount. You could always look around locally for some up-and-coming acts to lend you their songs for the free publicity. (My friend has done this with his feature-film he filmed last summer.) |

I agree, I don't like sites that have music play automatically when I open it. However, there must be a way to add music. Here's some answers that might help. |

I agree completely, I will quickly leave a website that plays music, no matter how much I actually wanted to see it. So very irritating. |

I am very much afraid I have to agree with the majority of the views expressed here. There is absolutely nothing that irritates me more than to have someone's perception of what constitutes "Good Music" thrown at me whenever I visit a web site.
If I truly wanted to hear music... guess what type of web site I would be visiting?
That's this man's view on that question, but I guess that isn't what you wanted to hear.

From a random CD picked up from my desk:
"Any copying, renting, lending, diffusion, public performance or broadcast of this record without the authority of the copyright owner is prohibited." (emphasis added)
You could try simply contacting the publishers of the music you want to use and asking for permission. Might involve some sort of license fee, which it sounds like you'd be willing to pay in order to keep it legal. That might be easier than looking for a website that might not even exist.
However, I do agree with the others about not using music on websites, I think it is rude and obnoxious unless it requires the person viewing to explicitly switch the music on. If a website starts playing music or other audio at me without me asking first, I close the site and rarely return (even in preference to trying to find an off switch).
Audio can be disturbing to the person looking at the site (who might be listening to something else) or to people around them (e.g. workplace, internet cafe/public library, at home at night while others are sleeping), or to people who have multiple browser tabs open because they're going to come back to looking at something (I currently have 66 tabs from 20-30 sites open in my browser, which is fairly typical for me).

Haha wow... I think you guys convinced me to go without music... The player I was planning to use would allow the option to stop and start the music or change it.. I just thought that a nice mellow melody would go well wih some of the slideshows.. but I can see how it would be annoying if you have other music already playing or 5000 windows open.. thanks for the advice :o)
