I did a little "self medicating"/"retail therapy"/"soul soothing" today. After a very hot/busy week at work and some CRAPPY picks this weekend. I really wanted some 'new' 'glass' to shoot birds/wildlife with. My Nikon 70-300 just does not do it for me anymore.

I looked high and low on EBay and found a couple that peeked my interest.
First lens I considered Opteka 500/1000mm $100 - Spent hours looking at reviews and sample pics. My opinion! This lens might be OK for someone not expecting much of anything. And has really good skills with a MF lens on a very tight budget.

Second lens I almost ordered Sigma 170-500mm $600 this is the best deal on a good tele I could find. I went to the store to get details and see if I could get it at the store and avoid shipping. I couldn't...the item is discontinued and could be ordered 6-8 weeks for $750 or purchased on eBay for the $600 for the limited stock remaining. My opinion- I read mostly really good reviews, seen some great pics, and is a great lens for $600 (orig.sold for $1200) it is being discontinued because of 3 or 4 similar 'new' lenses Sigma has added to their line. Worth looking into if you are in the market for a 'new' tele.

The lens I purchased Sigma 120-400 with OS(VR) under $1000. I am very please with it, only took about 150 pics with it so far and it is soooo smooth and fast. I really like the pic quality too (as good or better then my Sigma 105). When I tested at the store against the Nikon 80-400mm VR I could hardly tell the difference (I found the Sigma's focus faster/the Nikon VR was faster to lock in most of the time but both take under a second)and I could not justify the extra $500+. I will post a more detailed review in a couple days after I play some more.

I took a quick look through the forum and think I may be the first DPCer to purchase this lens!?!? As I did not find any posts about it and it̢۪s not in the database (I already sent my request to add) Thanks for reading. Scott

edit...to say YAY! it's added to the data base...Thx that was fast!
