...what would you do in a circumstance as this if you were to witness the same actions of pro athletes on the youth level?
Not just baseball, but ANY sport.
Repeat...ANY SPORT!!
Would you continue photographing? or
Would you put your gear down and help stop the unsportsmanlike violence?
Here is the stories for your reading pleasure.
An article about the #1 brawl in baseball on the ESPN website:
Juan Marichal vs. John Roseboro (Dodgers vs. Giants, Aug. 22, 1965)
No love was lost between the Giants and Dodgers during the heated pennant race of 1965. Marichal, facing Sandy Koufax at Candlestick Park, knocked down Maury Wills and Ron Fairly with brushback pitches before he came to the plate in the third inning. Koufax wouldn't retaliate, but his catcher, John Roseboro, would.
"When Marichal came up to bat, I tried a knockdown from behind the plate, throwing the ball close to his nose when I returned it to the pitcher," recalled Roseboro. "I expected Marichal to attack me in some way. If he had said anything to me, I had studied karate, and I was ready to annihilate him."
The karate didn't help. When another of Roseboro's throws came too close to Marichal's ear, Marichal clubbed Roseboro on the head with his bat, opening up a two-inch gash that would require 14 stitches and starting a bench-clearing brawl that lasted 14 minutes. Marichal was handed an eight-game suspension and fined $1,750, a huge sum in those days.
Marichal and Roseboro became friends years later -- Roseboro (and others) believed that Marichal wasn't getting elected to the Hall of Fame because of that incident. "There were no hard feelings on my part, and I thought if that was made public, people would believe that this was really over with," said Roseboro. "So I saw him at a Dodger old-timers' game, and we posed for pictures together, and I actually visited him in the Dominican. The next year, he was in the Hall of Fame. Hey, over the years, you learn to forget things."

Dude's got a bat! I'd let the people who's job is to take care of this kind of thing (umpires, security... other players) handle it, and continue to shoot... |

At the adult level the buffer could not keep up, but with children you have to break it up..

I would think it is your job as a journalist/documentarian professional to keep shooting. I had to learn how to keep shooting through the unexpected instead of just sucking in my breath and panicking inside in fear of people/horses getting injured.
That said, I recently put down my camera to console and help a little girl who came off her horse and was eliminated in a low level horse trials. She was leading her horse with the reins still around it's neck and for safety I helped her reorganize her tack and herself for her short trek back to the start. (it was only 3 jumps away from the start.... I can't believe that a parent or trainer didn't come do that, or even see if she was OK.) In doing that I missed one other competitor jumping a jump. Ordinarily, I don't interfere unless necessary for one's well being. Because I don't move and I stay calm, riderless horses sometimes come directly to me and let me catch them.

If my boy was involved, I'd be right out there. Otherwise, let the 'official' people handle it and keep shooting. Who knows, somebody might need photos as proof later on.
Last year at one of my son's soccer games (6 y/o back then), he was tripped up pretty good (on purpose by a little bratty kid) and he tore after the other kid with an intensity I've never seen in him. I stopped shooting and ran out before he could get to the other kid, but missed some great shots. :-( He got him back afterwards by faking him out a couple different times and scoring goals. :-) |
