PMS sucks, appropriately I guess, for this thread.
"Cute" is feedback, pure and simple; someone gave you a reaction, which is better than none at all. [and I say this, confident you cannot reach through your monitor and throttle me in some pms-induced rage ;) ]

Good luck hearing back abou the job, it's always a pain sitting around waiting. As for 'cute'...well, was your intent to portray cuteness in the shot? If so it's a compliment. If you're trying to portray a darker mood, then 'cute' might be an attempt at sarcasm. If it's not a baghead, check out their page and previous comments, maybe they're in the habit of leaving one-word comments. |

Who knows, it could be my sister and that's how she leaves comments. I never tell her what my entry is and sometimes she finds it and sometimes not, but when she does it's usually a one word comment unless she recognizes someone in the shot and then she doesn't vote and leaves a long winded comment. Sisters...

After a 7 year hiatus, I will start working again this coming Sunday.
I'm excited, but somewhat nervous as well. But I really am looking forward to it too.

Well, I did a big screw up! I bought a new computer (my old one was limping, it shut down on it's own on an average of 10 times a day). I couldn't write stuff to a cd from the old computer because it would no longer recognize the cd/r drive. So, I spent 2 full days moving stuff 2 gigs at a time to the new computer and deleting from the old computer as it was moved. Then the CF card reader drive died on the new computer (at 2 days!), so I bought an external harddrive to move everything so I could take the new one back and exchange. I copied everything (verified it was all there, mainly it's pictures we're talking about), deleted it off the computer I was returning along with any "purchased" software. Made the exchange, came home set it up again, plugged in the external and EVERYTHING was GONE!! WTF!! It wasn't everything off the old computer, but it was at least the last 6 months worth of pictures. I don't know what went wrong. The external didn't come with a manual, it's a WD (western digital) 160gig My Passport. Any way, I just needed to vent. |

Kelli, Kelli, Kelli. You've come to the right place. Here's my nice big comfy couch, so just stretch out, take a deep breath, and relaaaaxx...
Are you breathing deeply, dear? Good. First of all, stop blaming yourself. The machinery screwed up, not you. You did the best you could to ensure things went smoothly, and technical snafus happened.
Now, though it does suck royally to have lost at least 6mths worth of pictures esp due to stoopid computer problems, you can take more pictures.
Though I personally don't advise trying to duplicate the ones you lost, you CAN pick up your trusty camera and go take even better photos than the ones you lost.
And yes, things often *happen* for a reason. What would your next step be? Perhaps you're doing it already, planning to replace various bits of chugging and whirring machinery with slightly better bits of machinery. Maybe you're shooting like mad.
Basically, my advice is, first of all confirm the loss of the pics. Is there a data retrieval service in the area? If not, and the photos are gone for good, then do what feels right to you. What makes the most sense to you to do?
Then go do it.
(HUGS)
Susan

Right on Lea! And rest assured that you're not the first person making the transition back into the working world. I'm sure they'll do their best to make you feel comfortable. Be positive and open, and let them do their job of training you. And have fun!
Christian, so glad you're back online, it's been quiet without you around. |

Kelli, listen to snaffles she knows what she's talking about. Go to a data retrieval spot and let them see where it is. If you were able to transfer it to the WD external, then it's there and might just be hiding. Take the old computer in as well, they have ways to get data from a pooched hard drive and if the last 6 months photos are important enough then it's worth every penny to get them back.
It could be simple and cost you next to nothing or a little more involved and cost a little more. Either way the balls in your court.
Isn't snaffles's couch a comfy place :)~

Kelli, a couple of things - did the second new computer recognize the external - ie did it "see" it when you plugged it in? And do you still have the hard disk from the old computer? You can try plugging the hard disk from the old computer in (via an external enclosure - they cost about $25 or so and are handy suckers to have) and use recovery software to see what's still there. If all you did was delete as you moved, and didn't rewrite a bunch of stuff to the old drive, then it's all still "there" but has the first bit of some identifying file info erased to make it look like it's not there. Or something like that. At any rate, it's all still there somewhere. And if you verified it was on the external, it's all still THERE too. So nothing is lost, just hiding. |

Hi Kelli,
I am a computer nerd, so I may be able to help you. :)
First of all, when you moved the pics to the external drive, were they all put in a folder or into just put loose onto the drive? Second on your new computer, is it set to show "hidden files and folders"? If your old computer was set up to show hidden files, and the file was marked as hidden and you then copied the files to the external...and your new computer by default does not show hidden files (most are by default set up to not show hidden files) then that could be why you do not see them.
when your external drive is hooked into your new computer, and you go to: my computer and right click on your letter that is your portable drive, how many gigs does it show it is and how many free? Hopefully it will say something like 160gb with 100gb free so you know your files are actually on there, but just hidden. If that is the case but even with the hidden folders showing you cannot see the files, do a search using vista (or xp, whichever it is) on the drive letter for your external and search for all files *.jpg and be sure to include hidden files and folders.
the other good news is that if you still have your really old computer you can still get the files off of it, assuming that it has a working usb port to plug the xternal drive into. After you deleted the files did you empty the recycle bin? You may be able to get them back from there. However even if you did you have a good chance of recovery. When you delete the files they are actually still there until the hard drive writes something else over top of them, they are just flagged to not show in searches. go to futureshop and buy a program which is designed to recover files which are deleted but not written over, something like "search and recover 5". I would try installing it first on my new computer and get it to search for lost files on the external drive. If that does not work then fire up the old old computer and install it on there and search that computer for the files.
if you have any questions please feel free to email me from my profile page.
Good luck...and don't worry, they are still there somewhere.
Ernie
ETA: That is why if you are getting rid of an old computer it is best to transfer your files, then after you confirm them on the new puter delete them on the old machine and empty the recycle bin. Then in photoshop create a file which is just filled in with black nothingness, and enlarge the file to a large size and save as a tiff so it take up a lot of space on your hard drive. Go into the same drive on the computer the files were deleted from and copy the file, then repaste it continually till you run out of space on the drive. At that point all your old files that you deleted should be written over which makes them much harder for someone to recover. At that point if you are computer savy you can reformat the drive for extra safety.

Hi all,
I have a favor to ask. My nephew's girlfriend is in a singing contest. I'd appreciate it greatly if you wouldn't mind voting for her. The voting ends on Friday.
Here's the link. Her name is Mariah Raquel.
Many thanks, in advance.
Please vote for Mariah. |
