Well the Christians are coming to town. Next week they are all going to meet at Randwick Race Course (in Sydney) for World Youth Day (which is around the corner from my place).

The streets will be blocked, traffic will be chaotic & hell they've even introduced some laws to make sure we all behave ourselves while our guests are here. It is now illegal to wear an offensive T-shirt that might annoy 1 of our guests (not sure who gets to say whether it's offensive or not).

It is tempting to stick around for this lil' shebang but not being a youth or christian, the wife & I have decided to get outta here 'til it's all over so in 2 hours we leave for Thailand & Laos. Hope to get some good shots in that part of the world and it should be a lot warmer.

Disclaimer: The above views are stated tomgue in cheek and no offense is meant to any person thing or plant (just in case they're reading)

I am a Christian but the thought of that many youth being in one place would send me on vacation as well. :)

As for the "special laws," that is ridiculous. It's not like they don't see them other places.

The funny thing is that no-one is quite sure why the special laws about offensive behaviour were introduced. The Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Pell, has been quoted as saying he supported the right of people to engage in peaceful protest. The major volunteer organisations (e.g. State Emergency Service) that are helping with logistics etc. announced that they were not going to apply for their members to have the special arrest powers the government introduced.

Personally, I suspect that it's to try and protect any embarrassment to the government (not the Roman Catholic Church) - particularly after the APEC incident last year, when a TV comedy team managed to get a motorcade (including a man dressed as Osama Bin Laden) inside a security zone to the hotel where George Bush was staying.

I suspect you may be correct.

While I dont understand, nor agree with the special laws about offensive shirts, look on the brights side; with hundreds of thousands of visitors, they should leave a bunch of money in your neighborhood, and the little economic boom that it brings should be nice for business.

Plus... it would look really cool to get a group portrait with a million people in it :)
