Hi, think i already know the answer but thought i'd just double check. Will this lens fit a Nikon D40?

//cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-Nikkor-50mm-f-1-8-Ai-Standard-Lens-HS-11-Mint_W0QQitemZ300240216204QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item300240216204&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318

If not, i was looking into the //www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/5018af.htm (is it the same lens as above?)

From what i've been reading the autofocus wont work on a D40 so is there an alternative i should be looking into.

I may be getting myself totally confused but i've heard really good things about this lens so would like to purchase one but seem to be going round in circles

Many thanks to anyone who can help.

I believe it will fit the D40
It will NOT auto focus.
I shun Ken Rockwell I would NEVER take his advice! I suggest you do the same.

From Nikon:

" Other AF Nikkor*1/AI-P Nikkor: All functions supported except autofocus and 3D Color Matrix Metering II"

The ebay lens and the KR lens are two seperate beasts. The ebay lens is considerably older- its an AI (Automatic Indexing) if I remember my Nikon terms correctly. Very much before auto focus.

There is a very strong possibillity I am wrong with my next statment, anyone that knows better feel free to correct me.

I don't belive the ebay lens will meter with a D40. I think it will on some of the higher end Nikons (D3-D300).

I think you are right about this.
