It depends on your budget. I'm guessing you bought just the body. Also what do you like to shoot?

Yes, I did get just the body... right now I am using the Pentax K100D and with all the lenses we have I still prefer the 18-55.. I'm just getting the hang of this so I want something to start with and then upgrade eventually.
I live in Indiana so I'm not looking to shoot alot of landscapes.. mostly portraits and closeups..
I'd really like to stick to a budget of around $200.. |

I just bought a 400D and needed an all-around lens for it. I finally settled on the Canon EF 38-135 IS USM - and I couldn't be happier! It's got a great walk-around range and the IS is really helpful in low light.
I bought mine used and it ran a bit higher than your budget, but if you prowl eBay you might find one for closer to $200. Either way, it's well worth it.

I seriously considered this lesn but the reviews aren't so great for it... Went for the Canon I posted about above, instead.

I will agree with the post about the 28-135mm for a walkaround lense it is good for that purpose.
One piece of advice I'd like to offer is that you don't want to skimp on your glass. Most people when they get their first dslr (myself included) don't think about the lenses. I tell you what though, I picked up the canon 50mm 1.4 a few months ago and when I loaded my first shots with it on my computer my jaw dropped. The clarity is amazing! It isn't a walkaround lense so I wouldn't advise it for a sole lens purchase.... (although I use it on on my XTi 99.98% of the time) You'll end up missing the wider angle a lot.

This lens is a FD and will not work on your new 400D. |

And of course the f/1.8 version, which most people love, is only about $80. |

All EF and EF-S lenses will fit the EOS series cameras.
The old FD lenses will NOT fit the new EOS cameras (only old film models). |

| I have the 400D originally with kit 18-55. I since got the Sigma 18-200 OS (not for top quality but for versatility) and at the same time the Canon 50mm 1.8 II for under $80 on Amazon for better (potential if I was a better photographer) quality for DPC, though I'm submitting many shots with the Sigma. The 50mm has gone up a few bucks now, but still good quality for cheap and good low-light and shallow DOF capabilities. The Sigma is over your listed budget. |

No, it doesn't. The EF 50mm f/1.8 ought to be had for under $100, easily. Even for a new copy, and definitely for a used copy.

| B&H is a very reputable place to buy from. The Amazon price linked above is the same and there is no tax or shipping charge (to California at least). Not sure about B&H tax and shipping. |

I would buy from B&H. They are a great business and you'll find that they offer top notch service -- important in the long run. They will also help you if there are problems down the road.
Sometimes, it doesn't pay to save $5 here and there.
Just my $0.02 |

the lens i got for my 400d to replace the (crap) kit lens was the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8.
It's quite simply brilliant for the money you pay. Mine was $300. |
