The thumb grip on my D50 fell off yesterday. The glue has been disintegrating over the past few weeks until it was just gummy goo and it wouldn't hold the rubber on. So it fell off and I am sad.
I saw a post elsewhere indicating that you could actually buy a replacement. I of course e-mailed Nikon.
There response made me laugh:
Dear Craig,
Thank you for contacting Nikon Service Relations.
You can contact Nikon Parts Dept, Open Mon-Fri, 10:00am-6:00pm ET at 310-414-8107. They will sell you parts, but will not provide instructions on how to install any components.
We recommend sending your product service for an evaluation.
The replacement had the glue already applied to it. Its a glorified sticker.
*sigh*
:)

Nikon email support is a bit on the useless side, but whenever I call the parts dept the techs are pretty helpful. That looks like the El Segundo number. Call them and have them mail one out. If it's under warranty then they shouldn't charge. If it's not under warranty then it should be around $20 or so. I've gone through it a couple times for the grips on my D200 (used scotch tape to hold it together on shoots, that was pretty awful).
And yeah, it's a glorified sticker =)

Dang. The glue's going on my D200 thumb grip, assuming you mean the rubbery bit on the right side on the back. It's only a year old, too.

Dear Nikon Tech Support,
I got the part just fine, and fortunately an
instruction sheet proved unnecessary.
However, I've now developed a new problem:
a large black oval has been appearing in the center
of all my shots, and the Auto-focus mechanism seems
to be having a hard time locking-in.
Please advise.
Sincerely, |

lol...definitely had to laugh when I read that. For now I have hockey tape where the grip is. For those folks who have problems with their grip, apparently a good fix is to remove the glue using something like nail polish remover and then reapply epoxy to hold it on. Apparently people who have done this eventually had to replace the grip simply because it wore out but it certainly didn't fall off.

Be careful with the fumes. I know someone that destroyed his viewfinder by letting super glue fumes get too close.

Well..after going to the right phone number (the other one was for Nikon USA and not Canada) I have ordered a new thumb grip. Hockey tape is cool but not on a camera...

Duct Tape® is always cool and it comes in several colours, not just the classic silver/grey

The hockey tape isn't bad because most people don't even see it even if I show it to them. Its just not quite thick enough.
That and um...I wouldn't mind having some tape for my next stick! :)
