I just bought myself a little graduation present :)
A new macbook, the nice black one :) (yay I've been wanting to switch to mac for two years now!), along with Microsoft Office and PHOTOSHOP CS3!!!!!!
All for just $2000!!!! I mean it's still a big purchase, but it aught to have cost more like $4000. The reason I'm loving Apple so much right now is that even though I've already graduated (in May), they still gave me the education discount. All I had to do was call and ask! Photoshop for just $300! And the guy was soooo nice and helpful. I think I'm ready to say I've officially been converted :) |

Welcome to the bright side of life! Did you get AppleCare, as well?
Now, $10 for Macaroni (atomic bird.com), a disk utility like Disk Warrior, and some means to back up. I recommend OtherWorldComputing's Mercury Pro Elite firewire drives. Get a desktop unit, they're faster. And SuperDuper over Time Machine. (Macs don't use USB 2.0 like the PCs, way slow.)

haha, I said that wrong, I got the Word/Excel/PowerPoint etc software on it, NOT the operating system. My friend who works for Apple advised me against getting the Apple equivalent. And yes I got Apple Care, very excited about that! |

I agree about buying SuperDuper for your backups (although I use it to backup my external drives, and Time Machine to keep the main drive [with the OS files on it] backed up).
Macs use USB 2.0 the same as PCs do, so I'm not sure what you mean there. Yes, Firewire is faster and better, but a PC can use that, too.
Edit: fix typo.

| First thing I did when I got my Macbook Pro back in June was install Vista Ultimate on it. God OSX bothers me. The only thing I really truly enjoy about it is Command+Shift+4 to take a selective screenshot. All this "more intuitive than Windows" is a bunch of garbage. |

Then why did you buy a MacBook Pro in the first place?
Maybe for you it's garbage, but I can safely say, I'll never go back to Winblows at home. I have to use it for work, and well, all I can say is that it's still garbage, but thank God we have a decent IT department. |

My early model G5 box is still pounding along just fine. I am a happy Mac user. It's easy to find any shot in 15K photos with IPhoto.
I recommend a .Mac account for anyone using mac.

| I love the Mac OS, that was my main motivation for switching. Also because I'm tired of dealing with viruses, and I'm moving to China in August and of all the people I know already there no one with a Mac has ever gotten a virus while everyone with a PC has gotten several. Plus, they're cuter :) |

What a nice topic title! ;-)
Some thoughts:
If you're not too far along setting it up, partition the hard drive (large/small) and use the smaller partition for a stripped-down system plus utilities, so you can treat the main partition via a reboot. I use the free Carbon Copy Cloner for such tasks. You'll need an external FireWire hard drive to do this (ask for more details if you're interested).
Instead of buying Office, you could get NeoOffice for free. Supports .docx and even opens some docs Office 2008 won't (wps and such)!
Running Windows via Parallels is very easy and smooth, even on a laptop. Drag files back and forth between OS's as you work.
Anti-Martyr: I always thought computer users like you would make a great thesis topic!

Excuse me for liking hardware that doesn't cost a fortune and being able to play games :)
On an unrelated note (or is it?): My friend just got a 17" HP laptop for college. It's got a 512mb 8600M, 4gb of RAM, a 2.5ghz Core2Duo, and a 320gb 7200RPM HDD. He got it for almost a grand less than my 15" Macbook Pro with a 256mb 8600M, 4gb of RAM, 2.4ghz Core2Duo, and 200gb 5400RPM HDD. That's what I like to call a brand-premium. I got worse hardware and a pretty looking OS for a grand more than he did.

At the risk of taking this thread where we don't want it to go, I'll ask--how many years' use will your friend get out of the HP before it is useless and obsolete? Can it dual-boot OS-X?
I agree Apple charges a premium for certain things (RAM especially). So you order the minimum specs and do your own less expensive upgrades. I just tossed a 200 gig/7200RPM hard drive in my 2006 MacBook for a little over a hundred. Got 2 gigs of RAM from NewEgg awhile back. Runs the latest stuff and dual-boots just fine. Though I'm not a gamer ;-).
I work in IT (higher ed) and was just talking to a student who says she doesn't like Macs (she is using a 20" iMac). Her complaint had something to do with Word, which I reminded her was a Microsoft product... I fired up the free NeoOffice and she liked that better ;-).

Ironically, Word on the Mac platform has pretty consistently been rated as better than Word under Windows ... |

That still doesn't answer the question of why you bought a MacBook in the first place.
