Hey all,
I am looking for another digital camera, I mean I am in love with my DSLR Rebel, which is kinda vintage, but I am not looking to replace it. I am looking for something less bulky that I can take out with out having extensive camera bags with me. I am going to be at an internship in the middle of the woods many miles away from anything.. So I want to have my rebel for my breaks in the day, but have a point and shoot I can store in my pocket for other things.
I want great quality images, that can do macro fairly well. Besides good quality of camera ingeneral, I am not that picky.
I am leaving for this internship in eh.. 3 days.
And..
under 250$

Quality and < $250 don't generally go together. ;oP
A few questions you should probably ask yourself:
1) how much zoom?
2) how much noise at high iso will I put up with?
3) how much shutter lag will I put up with?
4) do I want manual controls or will the automatic settings suffice?
Answering these will narrow your choices.
Once you know what you want then you can do some comparisons. DPReview makes this easy with their side by side compare feature. |

Well, it doesn't meet the $250 requirement, but I would highly recommend a Canon G9. |

I think the Powershot A720 would be a good choice. 6x zoom, lots of manual control, IS, sells for about $200.

The A720IS does meet your requirements and it was recently recommended by Consumer Reports as well as getting good reviews on dpreview.com. I bought one for my wife who had a Rebel XT before she dropped it in a stream and she is very happy with it. |

Just got one of those for my son - he loves it and is actually taking pictures now. |

I also just looked in consumer reports and saw that the canon is one that is highly recomended, it made me laugh because it closely resembles my very first digital camera the A75.
I also went into the store and looked at a few things. I really need a camera with a good macro, and a few manual controls. Other than that my rebel can cover any long distance zoom and such.
I found three cameras that I did like,
Cybershot DSC S780
(I noticed the cybershots varied in the settings, like this one had amazing macro, while the other could barely focus..)
Coolpix S120 plum
Powershot A720 IS
(what does the IS stand for?)
Does anyone have any outright objections to the above?

I can sell you my (very) old fujifilm camera for like $25!!! :):) It doesn't like turning on, but it's not completely horrible. It's not bad at macro...lol.
IS stands for image stabilization I believe.

IS stands for Image Stabilization -- you want it.
The Canon S5 IS (like my S3 but newer) has a SuperMacro mode which will focus down to 0cm (though that usually means your lens is dusty!). It also has a long zoom. It may be a little larger than the other models you noted, but it could fit in a jacket pocket. Oh yeah, it uses AA batteries. |

AA batteries eh?
Like I said, I am going to be in the middle of the woods far far away from civilization. I would prefer to have a camera which I can just plug it in (since we should have electricity) in door plumbing may not be so sure.

Buy an older model Sony F717 or something.. you can take pretty good photos with it, and it is great for infrared! You can find them on Ebay for about $200.00

At $329, it's a little over your $250 budget but I think that one of these would be cool as a backup camera.

Battery life is super..charger plugs into wall, then into the camera. Lightweight, good zoom, and small enough to fit into a jacket pocket. I love mine. If shooting in the dark, besides the nightvision it also has "night framing". The camera will emit the infrared beams, focus, then flash accordingly for a photo that looks like it was taken in daylight.

Look at the Fuji F line. I got an F20 for $160 and it's fantastic. Small, light, batt lasts about foreve and IQ is outstanding. It lacks zoom - it's only a 3X (24-105 ish) but has good macro, excellent low light IQ
This is ISO 2000! (without NR)
and this was last week
