I took delivery of my new Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS yesterday so I thought I'd post my first impression.
WOW.
I've never even used a Canon zoom before, let alone an L series lens. Suddenly I know why everyone raves about them. I haven't uploaded any pics yet but here's what I'm loving so far:
- USM: I thought my Tammy focused quickly but this is unbelievable! And obviously it's incredibly quiet too (especially compared to the Tammy)
- IS: This thing seriously works. When I first started focusing at 105mm I thought I had suddenly developed a very steady hand, before I realised it was the IS kicking in. When I'm out an about there are always a few shots I miss because I wasn't paying close enough attention to the shutter speed - this lens is obviously going to dig me out of a few holes!
- Manual focusing: Before I got this lens I never really understood why people would focus manually in preference to using autofocus (except in low light conditions), but the focusing ring on this one is amazing and everything can be judged so accurately.
Well I've been shooting like mad and will upload a few shots later. Unfortunately I've just moved house and I'm without internet at home for a bit, but it gives me the excuse to spend more time on photoshop!
Happy shooting folks!

Sweet little toy, isn't it? It's in very good hands - I look forward to what you can do with it! |
