Hi

I have recently purchased an Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35 and I have a question regarding the USB connection on my camera.

When I have my 2Gb SD or 8Gb SDHC card in my camera, the camera has no problems reading and writing to the card, however, when I connect the camera to my USB port on my computer (Windows XP SP3), I am able to read files from the card, however I cannot write or delete files on my computer. It gives me a message saying it is write protected (The switch on the SD card is in the un-lock position).

I took the camera back to the shop and they tested it with various different SD cards, with no joy, and finally they called Panasonic Technical Support, and were told that this was a "feature" on newer Lumix camera's??

Can anyone confirm that they also cannot write to the SD card via the USB connection?

Thanks

Stu

I tried it with my Poweshot S5 and got similar results. I can copy from the camera, and delete for the camera, but I cannot rename something on it, nor can I copy something to it. I think the reason is that there are two modes of operation for these devices when connected via USB.

First there is MSC, or Mass Storage Class This mode causes it to show up as if it were a disk drive, the same way a card reader or a USB flashdrive would work.

The second mode is MTP or Media Transport Protocol. In this mode, the device is visible to the computer as what it is, in this case a camera, but it could also be an MP3 player for instance. This mode provides the ability for an application to access the device and interact with it. Examples would be The Windows scanner and camera wizard, or various photo organizer applications (Such as lightroom, or IPhoto).

I know my S5 only works in the latter mode. That is likely also the case with your Lumix.

I would recommend only writing and formatting the card with your camera, but if you need to do it on the computer, then card readers are cheap. I bought a decent multi card reader that handles the SDHC format for $13 U.S. recently.

Yeah I do plan on only formatting it with the camera,I was just curious as to why it didn't work?

Thanks, that has put my mind at ease a bit!

When I use the card reader built into my laptop, it locks the card. Put it in unlocked and when it comes out it is locked. It could be a feature of your card reader/laptop.

I now use a SDHC card reader that came with my Sandisk SDHC card and no problems.
