I took a picture for the current open challenge and accidentally discovered that if I use high pass on it, it makes it look like there is fog in my picture. Is that legal? The rules say that I can apply a filter in basic if I apply it to the whole image and as long as the filter is not an "effects" filter. Would the high pass in this situation be considered as an effects filter? |

Not positive about your situation but if you used a duplicate layer or different blending mode other than "normal" I do believe that is illegal. |

I've gotten DQ'd for the use of High Pass Sharpen in basic |

The process of doing high-pass filtering involves making a mask out of the image layer (whether this is done manually, or by an automatic high-pass filter). It's therefore not legal in Basic.
Edit to Add:
A good rule of thumb is that filters that only *globally* affect hue/saturation or luminance are usually OK. Most other filters are not. There are specific allowances for gaussian blur, added noise, and noise reduction filters. A good way to add a "glow" in a Basic-legal workflow is to apply a gaussian blur of a few pixels to the image, then immediately select Edit>Fade Gaussian Blur and set the slider to somewhere between 30% and 45%. Don't change the blend mode on the Edit>Fade dialog, though.

Thanks for the responses everyone!
Kirbic, I didn't want to add a "glow." I wanted to add fog to draw attention away from the ugly sky that had gone all white because the scene was high contrast and I didn't have enough memory left on my card to shoot RAW : ) I know adding stuff is illegal, but I was hoping I'd somehow ingeniously stumbled upon some sort of loop hole : ) |
