I found this small tool on the internet to extract EXIF info from all the image files and load it into Exel (
here : installation is in German, but program is in English).

I used it to analyse which focal lengths I am using of my 38-190 mm zoom (I am considering buying a DSLR and then need to decide on lenses as well).
30 % at 38mm
50% up to 57 mm
77 % up to 105 mm
then fairly even spread
but 8% at 190 mm
graph is here , based on some 5000 images.

Also I looked at aperture use, found :
18% at F8 to get maximum DOF
33 % at F2-F2.4 to get minimum DOF, or allow fast shutterspeed
16 % at F4 for maximum lens sharpness
rest is spread around F4.
And in non-macro mode at wide angle the aperture is fairly irrelevant anyway because of high DOF of my camera.

Similar thing for speed.

And I see I started with 20% manual exposure, 80% auto and now after two years it is exactly opposite.

And a suprising 10% is with flash, mainly family pictures. I expected it to be much less.

No real conclusion, but interesting anyway. Current thinking :
* a standard 18-70 (x1.5 factor) would cover 77%, but I would want a strong tele(zoom) as well.
* F4 or more open would cover 50% of my shooting. Of course DSLR has more usable ISO range, but much more limited DOF, is that what I want ?
* still need to look at total exposure (aperture, shutter, ISO) usage to determine required lens sensitivity.

Any thoughts ? Ever done this ?
