I have some china to "ebay", and I have NO idea what this piece of china is! (I know that it is Lefton China, and it has a number 5436 on the bottom.) Can anyone identify what this is, or is used for?
Thanks for any help!

Linda,

My sister-in-law is an antiques dealer and might be able to help with this. I sent her an email with a link to the photo. Is there any chance you could photograph the bottom as well? The markings there would most likely be helpful to her. Also, do you have any idea how old the piece is?

I do have a shot of the bottom, and will add it to the page shortly. Don't have any idea how old it is.
Thanks Terry!

How big is it? Is it a place-card holder?

It's 4 1/2 inches long, 1 1/2 inches wide, the opening on top is 3inches long, and 1/2 inch wide. It's 2 inches tall.

I thought about it being a place card holder, but thought it might be too big to be that.

Thank you! Would a "card" holder mean the same thing as a "place card" holder?

I tried going through some of the Lefton section, but didn't find your pattern. If you e-mail them your questions, description and photos they should get back to you. Although, I'm not sure that they ever e-mailed me back about my grandmother's china...but my mother has bought things from them quite often and they seem to be reliable in that manner.

Irene, It's good to see you back! I'm looking foreward to seeing pics from your new camera.

About the china piece. I think it is a knife holder, that was used at each place setting, while dining. I'm not sure though, it's an educated guess.

Ebay is a good place to sell china btw. I used to sell replacement china on there for a couple of years. It's been a few years now, since I did that. There are a lot more people doing it now, which, of course, lowers the prices on all but the rarest of pieces.

Best of luck!

i'm not sure and although i didn't do an exhaustive search, i googled "china card holder" and got this; whereas "place card holder" brought up a lot of pewter, few china options. the two examples (your lefton and the limoges) look more like a "calling card" holder that would hold a number of cards to be taken or given away at the door? weird for a piece of china which we associate more with the table. anyway, good luck! it's a lovely piece.

I think daisy hit it right. A calling card holder. That makes perfect sense, with the notches to accommodate gripping with thumb and finger. I bet that's it!
Good sleuth work Daisy!!

YES! That's it exactly (different floral design), but definitely the same kind of item. Thanks so much; I really appreciate everyone trying to help me out.
