I know this has been addressed before in some ways. What I am curious about is if sharpening in my RAW converter (Canon's DPP) is different from sharpening with Unsharp mask afterward in my editing app (PaintShop Pro XI and XII). I suppose experimenting with the same image is the best way to tell, but I am wondering if I should just apply minimal sharpening in DPP, or if I am better to lay it on thick in the beginning and do as much adjustment as I can while in RAW. |

Usually, you want sharpening to be the last step in your processing, because it can be affected by other adjustments. For example, Unsharp Mask works by analyzing color differences between neighboring pixels, and accentuating the color/tone difference if they fall within certain criteria. If you adjust the color/tone range before sharpening, the filter will be acting on different colors than if you sharpen afterwards.
But, as you say, the only way to know for sure is to process several (types of) images through both workflows and see which look better. |
