In a wild fit of ebay excitement I might have just splashed out on a new lens I can't strictly speaking afford... Specifically, this one. Should be with me on Tuesday - very excited!

This will be my first ever lens with IS and I want to make sure I can use it to its potential, so I have a couple of questions:

1) Do you leave IS on for all shots, even if the conditions make it unnecessary?

2) Exactly how effective is it - if for example you take the minimum shutter speed to be 1/focal length (35mm equivalent would make it roughly 1/40 to 1/160), how much slower is it possible to get the shutter?

Thanks a lot! :)

I love mine. As I get older, I get a lot less steady and I find it helps me immensely. I leave it on unless I'm using a tripod. I think you'll like it! As for what it can do - just try it out in different situations and see for yourself. Enjoy!

I usually leave it on, except for when using a tripod.

The IS is very effective. I've done about 1/30 @ 200mm on a 1.6 crop. Not every shot comes out, but with a steady hand it's possible.

Cheers Deb! I don't yet know whether or not the lens is going to be for keeps - as we don't really do cheap nationwide rental in the UK this is the best way of checking a lens out really. I can't afford to keep this and the Tamron so it's going to have to impress me! Will post some shots as soon as I get the chance - I'm moving house tomorrow so it's all a bit mad at the moment.

Does anyone else have any advice on using IS?

I've been able to get good results at 1/3 second on IS if I can position myself very steady. I've done this to get motion blur on a waterfall a couple times.

However, in most normal lighting situations with decent shutter speeds I find IS makes very little difference until you get out to 100MM or more.

Edit to add, I still leave it on unless shooting off a tripod though.
