In lieu of any contradicting evidence, I'm OK with considering this one obvious fact. ;-P There were some comments about the overall concept (with the title), but visually I think it would be quite a stretch for the typical viewer to see this image as a depiction of success. I'm not picking on Barry here- I've had entries that failed to communicate, too, and in retrospect I can pin them on a wall without the title and understand that. I only brought it up because HE commented on people relying on the titles to meet this challenge.

it was immediately obvious to me, but I'm strange.

Does this communicate success?

Is it because you "know" how boxing is played or is it because there are other visual cues that one could pick up from that might lead them to seeing "success" without knowing the sport?

Me, too.

When I was voting, I saw the shot, and could make a connection to success, easily. To me, it said, one "player" is down, another standing over him. There were some technicals that could have made the shot technically "stronger," but it does meet the challenge, and quite obviously to me. IMO, it meets the challenge even without a title at all (and I can say that because I don't remember what the title was).

Perhaps because I don't play chess and all but the most rudimentary elements of the game escape me?

I guess I'm not a "typical viewer."

I didn't vote, but my initial reaction would have been to assume it is a whiterook entry, destined for brown and likely going to get it, so "Success" would be appropriate in a twisted / reverse-logic sort of way.

Why wait for '09? Because it matches so well with '29? They do seem to happen about every 70 to 80 years. I got the original idea. I knew it wasn't a "Whiterook", because it lacked the quality and thought you put into an image. Most here at DPC can't properly appreciate your images.

It is always in the eye of the beholder. I do not see "success" in this photo. I see aggression which in itself does not represent success. But I digress....

It's only in the eye of the beholder if you have a bias blinding you. I see the aggression as well which leads me to see the success in the picture. Or do you dispute that he wasn't trying to knock him down? If he was it sure looks like he was successful at it don't you think???

Well why their wait in 1929? The 20's just like the 00's match up perfectly. The house market will start the depression instead the stock market back in the 20's. Every 40 years we get a recession or depression (1890, 1930, 1970 and 2010). Greed in the 1920s led to economic collapse. Herbert Hoover failed by opposing necessary government action

Just so you know, whiterook predicted the housing crisis. No joke.
