| I'm currently shooting with a 30D, and I primarily use my 50 1.4. I also have a Tokina 10-17, and a kit lens (which I rarely use). I'm looking for another lens, preferably not too expensive. The majority of my shooting is people, portraits and what not :) I've been looking into the 85 1.8, but would appreciate any opinions or recommendations! Thanks alot! |

| The 85mm is one of (if not THE) best portrait lenses made, but you might get more use out of a Tamron 28-75mm. |

Do you know how the 85 1.2 and 1.8 compare?
I obviously prefer the price of the 1.8, but am more willing to splurge if it's worth it. :) |

The 1.2 version focuses much slower, and the extremely narrow DOF can make sharpness a challenge, but background blur is awesome. I opted for the 1.8 version, but haven't shot a challenge entry with it yet.

I have both and shoot with both. The 1.2 is a better lens in essentially all areas. If I am shooting in a controlled environment I shoot with the 1.2.
For weddings and live music when people are moving, i opt for the 1.8 based only on focus speed. The 1.8 is a lot lighter, but that doens't matter at all to me.
Both lenses are good, the 1.2 is great.
I have both on my rental site. If interested, Ill send you both and charge you for 1, just pay shipping for both. That way you can see for yourself what works and what doesn't.
Be smart, rent before you buy!

I'm in the process of buying the 1.8 from a guy locally ... again.
I owned it once, loved it, sold it to buy the 24-70L ... recovered from that expenditure ... now I want one again
:)
(Are there groups for people like me who've owned the same lens more than once?)
