I am new to studio lighting and was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent first lighting set. I would like it to be portable and prefer that it is 220 volts. Let's say in the price range of $3,000.00 or less. Or just let me know some of the important things I should look for in a first set. BTW, I would like the set for portrait photography mostly.

I'm curious about why you prefer 220v? I would definitely recommend AlienBees, portable, sturdy, reliable and affordable.... but they run on 110v.

I need 220 because I live in Germany. I can use transformers but they are more of a pain then they are worth.

I know a lot of people swear by the strobist style of lighting at least for that first lighting setup. It uses flashes so there's no need for AC power. The whole setup is quite portable as well meaning you can take it pretty much anywhere. Again, no AC to tether you to an outlet.

Just a thought...
