if you put a 36 mm extension tube on a 5o mm lens, does that make it a 86mm. I know you can focus closer, but I am curious if it brings up the magnification as well? Thanks in advance...

I don't think so. I believe you still have a 50mm lens that focuses closer. If anything, you lose that distance when you use extension tubes. When I use them on a 70-300mm lens, I can't actually focus on anything more than about 5 feet away.
The distance measurement on the extension tube is moving the lens away from the sensor so it can focus closer. The distance measurement on a lens is measuring amount of "zoom" (for lack of a better term, I'm almost brain-dead tonight). Two totally different things.

| It doesn't change the focal length, but it allows you to focus closer. |
