Adding a switch to my network for some extra ports should be a simple plug-n-go, right?
I added a new Linksys SD2008 Gigibit switch by plugging an ethernet cable from it to the current router, a 10/100mbps BEFSR81 (anyport to anyport).
I moved the cables for my PC and the server off of the router and onto the gigabit switch. Internet works fine and all the shares on the server are still accessible. The problem is, I get no connection to the server when I try to remote in using Remote Administrator (Radmin). It's a 'headless' server, so I need the Radmin. I can still Radmin into a server and PC in a separate office location via my PC->gigabit switch->router->internet.
The switch is advertised as "non-blocking". I can still ping the server's IP. The Radmin port, 4899, was forwarded to the server on the old router. I shouldn't have to forward on a non-blocking switch, should I?
Any help much appreciated!

Just as a follow-up to the rush of help I got from you wonderful people...
For whatever reason, Windows Firewall decided to block port 4899. I put it in the allow list and all is happy and running on a network that's about 3.2 times faster. I suppose that the hard drives are now the limiting factor.
Thanks for all your help!
:-P

I've got a Cablemodem going to a Router and Wired/Wireless 10/1000 Switch (by D-Link).
I also talk to it via a web-page program. I have Norton's firewall/AniVirus on my laptop and currently just Window-XP firewall on the Tower-PC.
I did have to tell Norton to allow my IP address to comunicate through the web-program, when I set it up. |
