You're talking about wireless access points I presume. Wireless G, Wireless N. |

Yes, after trying to read those, my brain hurts haha. I'm not really that savvy with wireless technology. let me see if I have this right... If I am running a 20mbps modem, I should be looking at the Wireless N routers?

No. Wireless N is just the latest wi-fi protocol. Get a wireless-n access point (if indeed it's a wireless access point you're looking for). They are backward compatible with wireless-g, so your current wireless cards (in your laptop, computer, whatever other device) should work fine with them. |

The simple answer is, G will cost less, N is newer; it will have somewhat greater range and higher throughput and cost more. You decide whether the added cost is worth it. I run Wireless B, which is much older, slower and with less range than G, and I'm not in a hurry to upgrade... if that helps. |

Well, I'll also be getting a new imac at the end of the year, so I think it's probably best to go with the newer technology.
What are the benefits of an Access point over a Router? Does the access point have ethernet plugs in the back? I'll also be connecting my xbox/wii to the net via the router/whatever.
So confusing!

Access point is a generic wireless term - the box will be a router or a switch. You'll probably want a router. It has one external ethernet port (goes to the modem) and most models have 4 internal ethernet ports (goes to your xbox, computer, etc.)
G/N - doesn't matter as long as all your devices are compatible. |

Ok, that makes sense. Yay for easy explanations. Thanks!
Ok, now on to recommendations...
Right now I have a Linksys and am pretty happy with it. Are they the best?

I have this dlink router and love it, really awesome router. I am have two macs connected to it and two windows machines and so far no huge problems. Everynow and then my macbook will drop its connection but not all the other computers in my house are just fine. So I did some changing on the routers settings and so far its been solid no problems at all. I also have a Xbox 360 connected to it wirelessly and thats awesome no problems at all with that. I can walk around the whole house and outside and still have a connection.

4-port Gigabit network, Wireless B/G/N... looks like a beast. If you're not worried about spending too much, then I would only say... Enjoy! |
