A twenty-six year old died today after he fell from a catwalk into a coal hopper on Sunday while taking artistic pictures at an abandoned generating station in Toronto.

That's very unfortunate. I have on several occasions taken photos of abandoned buildings and while I do my best to be safe, there are no guarantees in such an environment.

Yes it does seem we will take more risks to get the shot than we normally would ever consider.

Take for example one of my favorite places to photograph the sunset, it is a rarely visited park several miles west of my home, down a single road, at least several miles from the nearest house. If there was gun fire, screaming, if a memory card went bad, no one but you would hear it.

The other day while shooting out there, a van pulled up behind be and three very rugged and mean looking guys got out with a dog. I had marsh on one side, them on the other.

Thankfully they was just showing their buddy the plans to turn it into a bass fishing area in a few years and telling him about taking airboats out on the marsh. So, no harm intended, no harm done. But, even seeing them pull up, which would have been a good chance to move back to my car, I had to keep shooting.

Stupid on my part and I need to take more precautions in the future, and need to figure out a legal way to defend myself. Or, find a different location.

Good locations around here are very hard to find, tall trees mixed with thick power lines and fences everywhere.

I may give a shot at using the top of a parking ramp, however this is not only private property but a good 20-30 minute drive, which makes going every day out of the question.

But, I will probably go back to the park again... I need to get more good shots.... hopefully via camera and not via gun...
