I recently bought a used Tamron 28-75 F2.8 lens. I got a GREAT price, but after testing it for the last 4-5 days, I think I have a dud. The focus seems VERY soft, especially at 2.8. So, if I can't use it there, what's the point of having it. I have my 50mm F1.8. It'll have top do for the low light stuff. So....

I'm thinking of returning it and getting the Canon 28-105 instead, as my general walk-about lens. The price is right. I can't afford the Canon L series 2.8 right now. Maybe if more of you buy my prints:-)

What are people's opinions on this lens. I think many photographers here have one. I'd love to hear from you, perhaps with some samples.

Thanks in advance.

I currently use that lens as my 'all purpose' lens on my 10D. So far it has been a great bang for the buck. It focuses quite fast (well compared to my 50mm f/1.8 II) and is sharp enough for me at the moment. It's a very light lens so it's easy on the neck. If you'd like some samples many of the shots in my gallery (link below) were shot with it. I can also provide some raw out of the camera shots if you'd like as well.

the 28-105 has served me as my allround lens for many years - and has only recently been retired in favour of a 28-135 IS lens.

28-105 is a sharp lens for its price. Definitely recommended.

I have this lens. For the price, you can't beat it.I shot this wedding,
this portrait session, this urban shoot, this lancaster, PA trip, these other shots, and many more in my pbase site.
It performs great for me.
This one was shot with it in low light, and through a screen and fence..not too bad.

How is this lens wide open? I'd love to see some samples of that. That's the main reason I'm returning the Tamron F2.8. Way too soft wide open. If you could post some 100% crops at F3.5 and 4.5, That would be great.

Thanks.

I recently bought this lens for general use and am very pleasantly surprised by it. Good build, high zoom ratio, great optics, cheap price, 58mm thread same as my 50 1.4. The results are much, much better than my F717's performace. When I sold my F717 I longed for a general purpose zoom, and while this is about a 44-168, not bad for walkaround. When my 17-40 arrives I'll probably use this lens less.

Remember that Canon only has one L lens in the normal zoom range...this is saying something. There's plenty of quality to be had here - it doesn't have to be the 24-70 in this range in order to get good quality. The 28-105 and the similar 28-135 have a zoom ratio that the 24-70 can't match, and are a lot lighter. Keep that in mind when shopping.

Images from this lens wide-open, no editing at all. copy them and process to see for yourself what this lens can do with the 10D.

From my experience the EF 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 II USM and the original version are very good performers for the money. The earlier version apparently had two revisions. The difference is in the number of diaphragm blades but optically the old version is identical and can usually be found for less money. Just make sure to avoid the EF 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM. From my experience the optical quality is a bit lacking along with the build quality.
