I have flown with my (large) camera bag as a carry on, but I have never attempted to take my Bogen 3021Pro as well. Any one catch any grief on domestic flights for carrying your bag and a large tripod? I'd hate to check it - the weight would cost me.

I usually check the tripod, but I'm leery of checking anything worth money in luggage. Maybe you could get an inexpensive, lighter tripod for travel? Slik makes some decent cheap ones. A Gorillapod might work for you, too (and would easily fit in a carry on).

Is there any type of extra insurance you can add to checked luggage, just in case? I've wondered this myself. We're traveling ourselves in a week and the tripod is going by mail to our destination. Of course, it helps that we have somebody that can receive packages for us.

Well, for $25 I can check an extra bag (with just the bogen) - so I suppose I will do that. I do have lighter tripods... I just hate using them. Thanks guys.

A couple of months ago I travelled internationally between Australia, Singapore and Thailand and domestically within Thailand. I was allowed to carry on my Manfrotto tripod (which was inside its own bag, Manfrotto MBAG80) as well as my regular camera backpack, at no charge, even though the official limit on all flights was one carry-on bag.

The check-in person at SYD had to check with his supervisor. Staff at all the other airports said it was fine.

With the head dismounted the 3021's legs fit easily in a standard piece of luggage, wrapped in your clothes. Re-mounting the head is a piece of cake, as I am sure you know. My brother and I use 3021's and have traveled extensively with them.

I've flown several times with my 3021BPro. I just pack in one of our checked bags. Never had to remove the head.

Most of my travel is domestic these days, and I don't check a bag if I can avoid it. I have a Calumet tripod that fits in a standard roll-on bag (when the head is removed). It's a smaller tripod, but is still relatively heavy and quite rigid, so I have no problem with moderately heavy camera/lens combinations.
