I know there must be a few eccentrics out there using Oly gear :)
I have an E-510, been very happy except that it seems to have more problems than I would have expected with high contrast situations. I do realize this has something to do at one level with smaller sensor size, part of the tradeoff of 4/3 system. Spot metering and some exposure compensation fiddling seems to help, and I also notice that using my polarizing filter does a nice job on some scenes, the ones you'd expect, sidelit scenes, etc. I'm wondering how much of a problem this has been for other Oly users, and any tricks you have found to minimize the problem (in-camera settings, filters, etc)?

No problem here but I like high contrast in my images so my opinion may not be of the norm. I presume you tried Natural picture mode and left all the settings at their default values? Have you also tried to lower the contrast with theses settings?
How about a sample. |

I have problems sometimes with bright yellows, magentas, and reds. (Either I can't get the same color as I see it OR it's so vivid that I lose all detail). I figure it's me who's doing something wrong and not the camera lol. Like  Jac said, I use Natural Mode for these occasions and I have a polarizing filter too. |
