I am very new to photography, and quite frankly, I suck. That is why I join these challenges, so I can learn. I thank all the people who have been helpful and offered suggestions. Why do so many people give 1's and 2's and not offer ANY constructive criticism as to what can be improved? If you think you can do better, offer some suggestions, share what you know. Oh, and by constructive, I don't mean "This pic sucks!!!" That isn't particularly helpful, and is kind of ignorant. We are all here to get some ideas, learn some tricks, and enjoy some photography. Have a little respect for your fellow photographers, or don't bother at all. That's my take. Anyone else?

1) It takes a lot of time and effort to do it well; the majority of voters lack both.

2) If you don't do it well (or if you do) some people people will write back to complain or argue, and they don't want to be bothered.

It is one of those "viscious cycle" things; until people leave constructive feedback photographers will complain, but people won't leave comments until it seems safe to do so without being harassed by upset photographers.

this topic gets talked about a lot around here. Many suggestions have been made, but the fact is we still can not make people leave comments that are constructive.

I do my best sometimes to help identify problems in a photo, sometimes I dont. but for me a pic has got to be REALLLLLLLL bad before i give it a 1 or a 2. and if I do give a score that low i usually leave a comment.

Just hang in there and do your best to ignore the thoughtless comments you get (we all get them) and dont take them personally.

Most of the time I wont read the comments until the day the challenge is ending, unless my score is above a certain #, then I read them as they come in.

Take lots of photos, look at lots of others photos, and expriment with what you see to try and recreate a certain aspect of sombody elses photo and you will start doing things yo never though possible.

Good luck!!!

A couple of comments for you.

1. All of your 4 entry's are 4.5 or above. Not bad for a newbie.
2. Are you familiar with the rule of thirds? if not, then learn it.
3. Do you understand the use of dof (depth of field)? if not, then learn it.
4. I see where you have no favorites selected. Study other photographer's pictures. Choose some favorites. Then study those favorites and compare them to your photos. Where did the photographer place the subject and what dof did they select? Where are the shadows? Are there shadows? How did they use light in relation to the subject?
5. After these things are completed.....either you won't care if people comment on your 1's and 2's, or you won't be getting any.

Hello Sean. 1]People don't know your a beginner when they are voting.
2]It takes a lot of time to vote on almost 400 photos and to comment takes even longer. 3]Not every comment will be a full thought or of profound wisdom.
Keep shooting, reading and trying. You have the right attitude. Ignore the nasty-unhelpful folks...they will always be there.
Finally Sean.... How many comments have you made? It will help you learn by looking at others work. It will help them if you tell them what you do or don't like.

Thanks to all for your views and input. I guess there really isn't a win/win on this matter. I never thought of the backlash factor, and I can see why that would make people apprehensive about leaving criticism. I have not left many comments myself (although I have if I gave a very low score), as I really don't feel qualified, so maybe many people feel the same way. Since everybody has a different impression of what is good and what's not, I'm interested in peoples view points, and do read comments on many other photos to learn what I can from them. I'm just hoping to learn as much as I can from these experiences, and will continue to plug away.
