One thing I try to do during a challenge is provide (1) a reference to the fact that my review is subjective to reinforce that this is only my opinion and not my attempt to say in an authoritative manner that someone's photo just sucks and (2) I try to include some idea of how to edit or recompose what I find to be disruptive or of a lower quality in the composition. It may be, as in Gary's case with his portrait submission, that I find the photo very pleasing overall but I still try to give some help on what, if anything, I see that could be distracting or unpleasing. During the last challenge (and into the current ones) I try to leave comments that describe how a person could try to work on what I saw because I know when I had less experience with some facets of both photography and PS people might say "I'd tone down the highlights in the cheeks" or "I'd bring up the light levels without blowing out the white pixels" and I wouldn't know how to do that. I have numerous PS books at home but you try finding just one useful method of doing something like that without clear instructions on tool names. Sometimes a comment might go farther to add general ideas of what to do like "Ohh, well just layer the original RGB with a copy of the blue channel and set it for Darken blend mode to lessen the highlights" (even tho that wasn't allowed way back when on DPC). That's cool and all but if you are just starting out it can still be frustrating to not know where to find that tool. Lately I try to give a step-by-step instruction if I think I might have a decent way to at least TRY re-editing the photo to enhance it (got some of that from Daschund Woof, John Smeets and Tim/TD27 over on FredMiranda) and I've gotten comments back from users that appreciate that I both took the time to comment with some depth on their work as well as giving some idea of how to do what I'm thinking of. It may be that they wanted the effect they got or that they know a more elegant or efficient way to do the same thing but for those that don't I've found that people tend to like it. At least most of the comments have been marked helpful and the e-mails have been positive.
I don't leave comments as often but I do try to get in depth as to what it is that I like, why I feel the way I do and why I evaluate the work as I do. Heck, it may be that I don't actually enjoy the person's work but I appreciate the work they put into it and the professional manner in which they approached the attempt.
I tend to not comment as much on the 3's and 4's 'cause I only give those for poorly executed shots or stuff that seemed to intentionally just push the challenge concept with no thought given to artistic attempt. If someone takes an artistic shot that I just wouldn't have thought about or they interpret something about the challenge differently then I'm all for it. To me a portrait is of a person but some of the highest ratings I handed out included animals. Likewise my inital concept of parallel includes straight, unadorned lines but it stretches me to realize that smokestacks, piano legs and other objects include, are composed of or depend upon parallel lines so I vote those based on technical merit and artistic vision. Hey, if they can help me see it from a different angle (pardon the pun) then it seems to me like they presented a fairly compelling view of something.

Yep, there are a few cry-babies on this site but I think the majority want to know why becuase they want to improve, there is nothing wrong with their reasoning. I personally dont much care if people dont like what I photograph and submit, its their opinion and view and they are entitled to it. If I like it, I like it, if they dont then they dont, I aint going to change peoples minds. I just love taking photos, sharing all the great photos on this site with a great bunch of folks.

You shoulda left that in. It could have gone down as a classic DPC moment. :) |

People who want the masses to leave them more comments might take a look in their profiles at their own voting habits - how many comments have YOU made to every one you have received - and return the favour they are asking for from others.

I don't mind my scores so much and I do try to chaulk it up to experience. I do however feel that if more people could comment constructively, it would help other users become better photographers(I said help not make)... |
154 comments made for 463 received. Not so great yourself...

Nope - complaining threads are entertaining to read. And without them I suppose that just leaves threads like 'Congrats on [delete as applicable] your new baby/your ribbon/your photographic genius' or 'Challenge definition not fair!' etc., etc.. And people can always choose not to read them of course.
BTW let's ban the word 'Congrats' it's overused, hurried and ugly. ;) |

Well today is a new day and today instead of complaining about the amount of comments given here I'm going to do something about it. You won't see me in the forums today....I'll be too busy commenting. Is anyone with me?
Have a good day :)

I certainly don't.
I get the feeling that there are two levels of people on this site.
The "profesionals" who know all about lighting and set ups and focal lengths and who seem to look down their noses at cats and dogs and babies and sunsets.
And the other set of people who like to take pictures of those sort of things and get "knocked" for doing so. |
I have to say I tend to agree with you and that is why I only tend to leave comments for the pictures I really like and not the ones I don't in case my comment about the picture is seen as "wrong". However I am making the effort to make more comments this challenge.
I can't belive people are sending pm's to anyone who leaves a negative comment!!! What's the point in that? I have sent one pm to someone who I feel challenged my entry as far as editing rules were concerned, but that was all. If there's one thing that DP Challenge is teaching me it is how to take cristicism and just go with it. I've only entered 4 challenges so far but taking the knocks is a fast learning curve!!!
And I do agree that there seem to be 2 types of commenter, however you can never change that I suppose. |

| I'd like to thank KevinRiggs for the approach he uses in commenting. His very long post above seems to have been overlooked. I wish more people would comment as he does. |
