Just finished (after what seems like years and tons of technical issues) getting my new site up. Still have all the pictures to load. WOuld love to have hae any critiques, etc. I am not able to see it on Windows IE, so anyone can tell me what is screwed up. I can emulate through Safari, but not sure I am getting the true picture. Also noticed if the font size is larger than the 100% default...problems.
The site is at New Photos4Aidan
There is the sample pictures in the Portfolio/BW and Portfolio/General areas, also at this time. and I know the tip banner on those pages is smaller than then the main area when a landscape ratio is shown (fix that later, when the rest of the photos are up). I wanted the Portfolio area to have 600 pixel width. The regular browsables will be 512 and not change anything.
Thanks for all ahead of time!
Oh yeah....alot of you have links to your sites from that previous forum. Any more?

Hi dacrazyrn,
I check out your site (I us Windows IE). Looked Great. Over a 28k modem it was really slow. I don't know if its possible to squeeze the index (home) page in any more but in my viewer it had a tiny scroll bar, which isn't that necessary. The only problem I had was that some of the frames didn't line perfectly up. Index page: PLegal.jpg doesn't line up with LFrameBot.jpg, Prints - the entire column of IBW.jpg doesn' line up with TitleBanner.jpg. The menus are screwy, I'm sorry to say, when you mouseover the button nothing happens, but when you mouseover where the menu popup (from the button) should be the menu pops up. Basically, it doesn't popup for on the button but does when to the right of the button. These doesn't seem like what it is supposed to do. I also don't think the menu should open to a new window (profile options).
The colors are nice, I like the slideshow, and I like the amount of options provided. I did not see any problems with font size though I've had a few of my own with "default font."
IMO, "Don't forget there is a search bar below," seems corny and sounds like an advertisment. I would probably take it out or rephrase it to something like, "A search bar is provided below." But more likely eliminate it. People can find it. Cool Pictures, nice site. yet more technical problems to fix. Happy website-creating!
P.S. You can check out my gallery (much more simplistic) at gallery.cannonbeachchurch.org I plan on having a full update (with current photos) done by March 25th so please check back often. Thanks |

thank you very much! what version of IE are you running? I have redone the site 2 times because of IE. Got it looking right in Mac IE, but no access to windows till thurs. what size of monitor by the way also. I set it up to fit in 800x600. I found in Mac IE when the text was rearranged (smaller) everything would line up like it suppose to. Maybe I will decrease font size a little more. ( I am on 1680x1050, so hard to judge if font is big enough).
thanks for the comment on the search. I will do that. I just thought on smaller monitiors it might be hidden.
I wanted to make it pretty simple all the way around, but simple seems like a tough thing to accomplish when you are trying to work in a style you like with umpteen different browsers.
I can understand slow on 28k. where in OR are you? we need to upgrade your modem, brother! (C;
I like your Simply a Sunset. very good shot!!

I didn't know anyone used 28k.
I think I'd die.
Anyway, I think the site looks great, but it's a little busy. I've always thought when showcasing photography to not that the backround to so full of stuff. The more simple, and plain, the better, in my opinion. |

i checked it out on IE6, running broadband so no load time issues and 19" monitor so no scroll bar appeared.
I'd agree with movieman, it is a little busy, I would seriously consider getting rid of the vertical lined background. Great pictures shouldn't be surrounded by distracting images.
I'm a web developer by trade so I'm quite picky about web site details, I for one HATE times new roman on the web, it simply wasn't designed for online use and looks rubbish IMHO, verdana however was specifically designed for screens and looks so much better.
There is a slight line up problem too, I'll post a screensot at some point to show what I see.
Otherwise looks great. |

Well now you do! My parents say that I can pay for it if I want to upgrade. Bah! Fortunatly I can surf at school, much faster.
Thats weird, I at 800x600, I think its a 15in monitor. Our other comp is alot bigger and it would work on that one, I'm sure. IE 6. The Oregon Coast, close to Washington.
Thanks, although 'Simply a Sunset' was an ok sunset, I like my Lone Bird shot alot more (in my portfolio) it was much more vibrant. |

Ah, cool. As long as you have the fast net at school you don't need an upgrade.
And thanks so much for the critique on my photo, by the way. It's very much appreciated. And helpful. |

Well I may sound harsh, but I think it's too cluttered. Many moving texts, images that flash on and off and the background is bumpy and rough.
All these things don't help to keep the users eyes on your photographs.
I would suggest a plain font, one or two complimentary colours (black white or complimentary pastels) and go from there..
Really depends on what you want to do with it - whom your target audience is..

One thing with websites is the main page or a large portion of it should load quickly so the user has something to look at/read while the rest of the page is still loading.
At home I probably wouldn't notice as much since I'm on high speed but at work I'm on a LAN that is almost as slow as dial-up or at least it feels that way.
(Impatience?, my middle name)

Oh yes, to answer a few questions. I want it to be an informational site along with photos. that is why I designed it to have almost instant access to photos if so chosen. I wanted info on myself (cause I like to know what other photographers do also). and the releases accessible to people, along with copyright, and ESPECIALLY how to order. That is the big one. Hope that gives a touch of insight.
