I have a D40 and so far just the one AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm lens. I'd like to try and find a lens with lots of capability, ie zoom/telephoto/macro/wide angle...if such a beast exists! Does it, or do I have to buy individual lens for all of the above?

Nikkor 18-200mm VR is as close as you'll get.

Bear is probably right about the versitility of the 18-200 overall. I have one for a travel lens, sold it once and then repurchased one because I missed it for that purpose. However, I would not class it as a macro. If you want to do macro work you will only be happy with a dedicated lens for that.

Nods, the 18-200 is a great lens, I will always own mine. However a macro lens it isn't so much. B&H lists its magnification at 1:4.5, meaning a dedicated macro lens like the 60mm Nikkor f/2.8 will be able to get 4.5 times "closer" to your subject, which is a big difference. The 60mm is actually the second lens on my wishlist, the first being the Sigma 20mm f/1.8. :)

In my opinion...save money and see if you can get a non VR.

My 2 cents...

VR is great at letting you shoot in low light and need to go below 1/60 sec. I shot well "hand held" down to 1/15 with my VR...but...and here comes the big hairy but...

....while the VR would "steady" my hand, I found that (common sense) at speeds below 1/60...if my subject was even THINKING about moving...they were blurred!

So of course it "steadies" your hand but your subjects must remain still.

In short...the VR allowed me to shoot down to 1/15 before I needed my tripod.

I now own a 50mm 1.8 a 70 - 200mm 2.8 and the old...18-70mm 3.5.

Please no one jump on me and beat me with camera straps...it's just my opinion
