I've not heard anything specifically against Sigma, in fact they seem to be pretty well regarded. A lot of DPCers own them, in the thousands.
I cannot say what happened to your lens. I know that some oils will damage and dissolve o-ring rubber, like petroleum jelly. You didn't try to oil the lens yourself did you? It is also possible it is an environmental reaction to something, a certain chemical added to some types of rubber can leech out and soften other plastics and rubber it comes into contact with. Where did you store your lens and in what types of environments did you use it in? What temperatures did you expose it to?

| ya ive got nothing against them but this isnt my lens im dealinig with. it was said to be stored i think in the garage so that may be the factor of heat somewhat. although we live closer to the coast and it never gets above 70 around here really. but it was stored for years. maybe 3-4 i duno. but once you get past a certain point in the push pull, its frees up and becomes manigible. i told him to just lube up the barrel and hope for the best. i dont know how much it its to have them crack the thing open and reapply new o rings but he has pretty much ruined the lower end of his lens. w/e. thanxs anyways |
