So about 3 weeks ago I finally sent in my 70-200 in for repairs because it was not working so well and I got it back today. I have yet to go out and see if they did a good job or not but it has been scratched pretty bad on the tripod mount and the ring around the lens. Also I can see dust on the inside of the lens. So the question is do I just take it for what it is, or do I phone up and complain and have to wait another 3 weeks to get it back again?

In my estimation, damage to the paint is inexcusable. Also, if there is significantly more dust internally than when you sent it, that seems very strange. Are you *sure* that the lens yoiu received back is the same serial number as the one you sent?

I would call and at least complain and see what they suggest for remedy. I,too, got my 100-400mm back with a minor scratch by the tripod mount, I'm assuming that is where they place the tool to disassemble the lens. The scratch was so small I didn't bother calling, it wasn't worth the hassle to me. If you do call them let us know what they say, good luck.

Yeah its the same serial numbre.I have never noticed any dust ever in this lens before, as well as the fact that on the invoice that came with the lens they said they had cleaned it... obviously they did a terrible job. I'm going to phone I guess I just hate doing this sort of thing oh well.

I'll keep you posted trevytrev

I recently had to send my 50mm in for repair. It came back as dirty and smeared as when I sent it to them (when I first broke it, I gave it a completely irrational wipe with a balm-impregnated tissue - that really helps a broken front escutcheon, doesn't it?). I really expected them to at least give it a wipe over with a lens cloth upon completion.

I had very bad service from Nikon UK, so much so that it made me switch over to Canon. I recently sent my 24-105 nightmare lens in for a repair to the zooming ring. It was a little late coming back but totally clean and working fine no scratches, maybe I just got lucky.

I hear quite a few horror stories from Canon service though.

This is the sort of thing you could expect from a local shop or something of that sort, but I thought sending it into a canon repair shop would mean a commercial grade repair but I guess not. Pisses me off and I know their going to do crap all about it.

I'll have to say this I have phoned canon three times in the past and every time the gentlemen on the phone has been very polite and considerate. Phoned them and he said to send it back in and they would repair the pieces that are scratched and would clean the lens again... so basically I have to spend another 20 some bucks to ship it and wait another 3 weeks to get them to do the job right... what a pain in my rear end.

Which Canon repair center was this, BTW?

I just picked up my camera from a "local shop". They did a repair & cleaned the sensor for $70. I wouldn't knock them till you try them.

The repair shop was the Mississauga Ontario one.

I've had two great experiences at the Irvine CA center. The first time I had a cracked rear lcd, they had it back to me in 3 days and they also replaced all shutter mechanisms and gave it a total cleanup/overhaul for free. The second time was for a broken 580ex and a 30D/24-70 calibration. Both times they had it back to me in 3 days. Very nice and helpful staff there.
