"Powerful Tools for Quick and Easy Photo Editing

TOKYO ΓΆ€“ Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of the exciting new Capture NX 2 photo editing software. An evolution of the original award-winning Capture NX software released in 2006, Capture NX 2 makes it even easier to make quick and powerful photographic edits so you can spend more time making photographs and less time editing them on the computer..."

Crappy mini-site. All that Flash takes too long to load. Wonder if NX2 addresses any speed issues that NX has now. It is WAAAYYYYY SLOOOOOOOW!
No wonder why they gave away NX for free with my D300.

Is there gonna be a free update for Capture NX1 owners? That'd be nice. Otherwise I'm gonna have to... *ahem*... "acquire" it... <__<

Would you be happy if someone "aquired" one of your photos and used it in an ad campaign or something?

Rumor:
100$ for current NC users
200$ retail

my Mini review: (with the caveat that i didn't read the manual)
(on a P4 with 3gig of ram, 1T of disks)

GOOD
MUCH better interface / some things are more intuitive & convenient
very responsive for multiple operations /much better way of copying adjustments
much easier batch adjustments
BAD
closing files slow slow slow / dumb way to do sharpening for every new pic is to access the menu ..
doesn't remember last settings (if i saved the last file as a hiQuailty JPG don't keep defaulting to TIFF aaaghhh...)

etc ..

I've never used NX before so I dl'ed the 2 month trial to give it a whirl. I was impressed with the output, but I won't be purchasing it until I upgrade my computer (Centrino Duo, 1gb RAM lappy... I need more dilithium!).

NX is a total memory hog. NX2 does have a better interface but it's still slow. And getting used to a new GUI can sometimes be a real pain. :(

I am currently running NX1 on my laptop. Dual Core T5450 1.66Ghz, 3Gb RAM, seperate videocard with 256mb, Vista Home Premium. I have given NX1 and Photoshop some advantage in memory usage and must say that it is quite fast when I run it at the same time with Photoshop CS2.
Editing goes fast enough and sending the file to Photoshop takes less than a second (on my old machine more than 10). Only saving files to Jpeg is still a PITA. But I send it to Photoshop anyway and never save in NX.

So with some good hardware NX will do just fine. This is not simply a raw converter, combined with the control points you have a quite sophisticated editing program which saves you a lot of time because it can make smart masks. But if that is the only thing that you want it for it might be more interesting to use the NIK Viveza plugin for Photoshop, wich gives you the same editing capabilities, but now in Photoshop. If I am not mistaken also the NIK Color Efex Pro 3 series gives you u-point control like this for the specific filters.
The NIK filters are in my opinion one of the most time saving filters out there. Very easy to use, great results, in only a few seconds.
