Yes you can "burn" in advanced.
//www.dpchallenge.com/challenge_rules.php?RULES_ID=17
You may
"apply filters, effects, dodge & burn, and other tools to all or part of your entry, but NO new shapes or features may be created in the process." |

what waz says is true.
You can use the burn tool, but if the object is not dirty at all, it could "cross the line."
If you have doubt, the best advice would be to send a resized original and a an example of what you are wanting to do. |

Okay thanks.. What does the 'but NO new shapes or features may be created in the process'. Would this allow me to burn, let say, a 'clean table surface' to make it 'look dirty'? |

If the dirt didn't already exist, I would consider that a new feature and vote DQ. |

Well if that's the case wouldn't this be a DQ?
I would think that it would be legal to dirty the tablecloth. Much like this man's face has been dirtied(sp?)
Sorry not to pick on this image.. just an example
