It seems some people are making such a big deal about Lidstrom being the first European captain to win a Stanley Cup and while it's a little surprising it's taken this long for that to happen I don't think anybody can really dispute that the region producing the most of the high end talent these days is Europe and not Canada.

I was referring to the fact that there are so many Swedes on the team and Europeans in general so they'll be taking it overseas when it's their turn to have the cup.

Really now... People like Crosby, the Stahl brothers, a certain goalie by the name of Fleury, would be considered what ... the dredges of the NHL.

If indeed what you suggest is true, how do you explain that the Canadian teams have won the Junior World Championship so many times in recent history. I would love to dole out some statistics on the matter, but unfortunately I am at work and do not have access to such information.

When one considers the size of Canada, I do believe that statistically we still continue to outshine other nations when it comes to producing quality hockey players.

Well the World Championships (not juniors) has been won by a team overseas 8 out of the last 11 years including this year. The Czech Republic alone has won it more times than Canada during that stretch. The top goal scorer in the regular season was Ovechkin. The top five goal scorers in these playoffs Zetterberg, Franzen, Hossa, Datsyuk and Malkin (and that's even with his Cup flop). Granted Crosby was tied for first in points in the playoffs with Zetterberg and right behind those two was Hossa, Datsyuk and Malkin again. I don't think anybody can disagree that the best defensemen in the playoffs and in the regular season was Lidstrom and the best defensive forward Zetterberg. The best hitter Kronwall. Canada's best high end talent these days is in goal it seems with Luongo, Brodeur and the new kid Fleury so maybe I'll concede that Canada owns that position? ;)

Oh and btw, the Norris, Art Ross, Hart, Rocket Richard, Selke and the Conn Smythe Trophies (i.e. all the high skill trophies with the exception of the Vezina) will most likely go to Europeans. In fact I'm pretty sure of that without even looking at the nominees.

I do agree the European captain nonsense has been overplayed. As far as talent goes, while I personally do not care where a player was born (if he plays hockey, he is a hockey player - that's as deep as I consider the issue), I looked up some stats out of curiosity and it seems arguments can be made in many directions.

But who cares about that?? As a season ticket holder, I'd like to point out that the Wings won the cup, have no salary cap issues, no major free agents to worry about signing and are in a great position to repeat!! This is, after all, a thread about the WINGS, right??!!

I agree. Plus they have yet another low round draft pick from Sweden that probably will become a star real soon in Jonathan Ericsson. With all the talk about the Lakers GM this year nobody really can compare to what Ken Holland has done in Detroit over a decade with no high round draft picks to work with.

The Red Wings are a very international team, no disputing that. However, home base during the hockey season is the Detroit metro area for team members.

Proud to be Red Wing fan and former Michigander (former in location only, always in heart matters).

I will grant you that, but you made specific reference to new talent, hence my reference to the juniors which is where young talent normally emanates from.
