I will be traveling to the Outer Banks next week and will be staying there for approx. 6 days. My girlfriends parents live right on the sound in Southern Shores, so I will get to take some amazing sunset photographs. What I was wondering was if anyone could point me in the direction for some great sunrise photographs, as well as some other photographic opportunities.
I all ready plan on spending some time in the Cape Hatteras area. Anywhere else that I should keep on my radar?
Architecture, Landscapes, Seascapes, Sunrise/Sunset areas, etc. would be swell!

The Outer Banks is probably one of my top three favorite places in the country. I haven't been there in quite some time, but it is absolutely beautiful. You'll find so many things to photograph you won't know what to do with yourself. Also bear in mind that it's essentially an island, so you'll be able to get the sunrise on the ocean side, and the sunset on the intercoastal! I'm JEALOUS!
*
As far as specific places... There are miles and miles of protected coast land with nothing on them but sand dunes and natural plants. Pull off the road or drive right onto the beach and you'll find it! There are several lighthouses, interesting bridges, quaint houses, just depends what else you might want in the photo. (If you drive on the beach, let the air pressure in your tires drop to about 10-15lbs. learned that lesson the hard way, though there will be plenty of people willing to pull you out, for a fee.:-) There's a Marina near Oregon inlet campground that has air for when you want to get back on the road!
Enjoy your trip!

Thanks Jake, I have heard about the marina, someone else mentioned that it would be a good place to do photos during sunrise as well as when some of the boats are coming in. I also plan on going to some of the light houses. I'm hoping to come back with so much good photography that it'll make me puke. Here is hoping to fantastic weather and amazing skies!
I will have access to a 4x4 vehicle.
Thank you for your input!

Not sure how far this is, but I was there this summer. My favorite place was Jockey's Ridge State Park.
I went there in the morning to catch a sunrise shot over the dunes with some hang gliders, but they don't get out that early. So go there for the sunset.
Took this there:
You'll also find people hiking to where the dunes overlook the water (facing west) for the sunset. It had the feel of a mecca, so many people seemed to be walking that way.
I had to leave to go to a family dinner, or I would have a great shot of them on the hill with the huge sun in the background (I actually was at my car already, when that happened, I tried to catch it from the lot across the street but there was too much in the way.
But I got this shortly before I left.
My favorite place from that trip. You might also check out the lighthouses for interest, but I skipped them because I don't care for the "look" of them. Speaking of "skip", skip who goes to NC a lot, might have more advice. And he has an awesome lighthouse pic:
It might be a big drive for you, but you might want to go to try to take some pics of the Corolla Wild Horses

nice shots Neil. Did you use any filter on those Jockey's Ridge shots?
We're heading for Southern Shores ourselves the first week of July. Can't wait.

Thanks. Just a GND, as always. The color is emphasized in Lightroom (just color temp and regular brightness/contrast/vibrance settings). |

I just saw this post and I realize I might be too late, but if you head North toward Corolla you can see the Currituck light house and the Whalehead Club. I went to the WH club at sunset and about 6 of us were trying to get some shots in, so I would say that is a popular place to go. If you're hungry for dinner you can always eat at the Sunset bar and grill and then take photos from deck. There are some paths through the woods to the sound that be nice, too. There is one at the WH club and then one up the road. Then you keep on going up to the area where the wild horses are. The beach is right there, so sunrise pictures are no problem. Another thing I look up before I go down is the moon rise time. One year, close to midnight the moon came up and it was awesome. (hasn't happened since) Also, it's so dark up there and the stars look cool too, kind of like fairy dust in the sky. That's all I can think of...have a great time!
