What would I need to maximimze the spread of light from my one flash? I know various diffusers such as lumiquest and Lightsphere help to soften - but if I want, say, to take a larger group photo inside and want to avoid flash drop off as much as possible - what works best? I have a 550ex.
I'd like to avoid setting up an umbrella if possible, but if that's the best, then I may go for it.
Thanks! |

my one flash?

The question was what to use with one flash. I understand that it's not ideal, but I figure I might as well maximize what I have. I also don't have stands. My budget to make this better is about $50. Can't do alot with that, I'm afraid, but it's the reality of the situation. It's not a huge group and I think the power will be there, but nonetheless I'd like to spread the one flash as evenly as I can. |

If you only have one flash and need to minimize fall-off, then it needs to be as far from the subjects as possible. With this in mind, you probably cannot use a modifier, since that will eat up too much light.
I'd suggest putting the group near a light (white, ideally) wall, then put the strobe on the opposite side of them and use the wall for fill.
You need to decide what is more important: soft light or minimal fall-off. With only one light--and shooting a large group--it'll be tough to have both.

I never really got the concept of the bits-o-plastic on the front of the flash.... They might spread the beam more (although flip that plastic thingi on and I doubt it) but they have to eat light power to some degree. Can you bounce of a roof or wall (will be softer light also)? |
