I had a difficult time choosing for the portrait challenge. Would like your opinions on what photograph you would have chosen and why. B&W or color. diffusion or not.
Submission
in color
outtake
outtake#2
other session B&W

other pose
B&W with diffusion filter
Thanks for amy input/ideas! |

I like this one the best with some sharpening added.
Maybe try some different lighting techniques one day when they are in a model mood.
Pretty girls. |

None.
Although the shots you posted here are all enjoyable on a personal level (they're 'cute' and probably mean something to you as a matter of 'record'), I'd expect something riveting in terms of character, life experience or expressedly charismatic. Portraits of children, IMO, are more difficult and demanding to do well in such a context because of their association with precisely the 'cuteness' I referred to (above).

Thanks, Justine, I will try some more lighting techniques and fool around some more with sharpening. I see we have the same camera now, do you have certain steps you go through with each shot you take post processing that you would like to share.
Zueszen, I appreciate your opinion, thanks to you both for taking the time. |

Beyond saturation, contrast, sharpen and unsharpen in Photoshop that's about it. Tripod/monopod are a must for me in many shooting situations. I have been trying to do more shots with depth, and a richer feel... I've been trying to (play) experiment more with dof, shutter speeds and lighting.

This is made for the 300D....its really very good. |

I vote with Justine. For me "outake" displays the most character. As for the little one I like "B&W with diffusion filter" again for expression and character. - but like zeuszen said "....are all enjoyable on a personal level" I would also add - all the pictures are surely precious for your album, and appreciate you showing them. |

Justine, those are the steps I take too. There was talk of a photoshop action on the forums for the 300D that does a few more things but it wasn't compatable with 5.0. Either is the fred link you posted :(
I really have to get an updated version of photoshop.....
Undieyatch, thanks for your input too, it's so so hard to judge photographs of your own kids. |

jpochard and heida, thanks for taking the time to comment.
jpochard, you like the diffused look or the pose/facial expression?
heida, you also took the time to comment during the challenge, thanks again.

I have a little different method when turning my pics to b&w. I do my levels first, then click monotone in the channel mixer. Then i adjust contrast a little, and sometimes go into the individual colors to adjust the neutrals and blacks. For a toned photo I then go to hue saturation and click colorize. I then adjust hue down to 35-40 and saturation between 10-20.
Paige those are all nice. I felt that your entry was a little too uncomfortable in the pose. Her head was a little too tilted.
My favs are outake and b&w with diffusion.
Great models and nice pics. |

Thanks, Terry.
I will try your method for converting to black and white the next time I need to. It will be interesting to see how much more control it will probably give me. I do use your same toning technique, it seems to work well for me, although I don't use specific numbers, just mess with them until they look right to me. |

Prefer black and white on all the shots of the older model and colour for the ones of the younger. I'm assuming they are your daughers?

I like your entry the best, although the other shots are lovely, too.
Your question asks about B&W or colour. I guess that it's pretty much up to the environment you're shooting in and the model. A young girl wearing colourful clothes screams out to be in colour. A more subdued portrait might work well in B&W.
I don't agree with Zeusen's opinion. Children can and do have character, one which I believe your shots show clearly. |

I did, of course, never say they couldn't and didn't. What I did say was this:
'Although the shots you posted here are all enjoyable on a personal level (they're 'cute' and probably mean something to you as a matter of 'record'), I'd expect something riveting in terms of character, life experience or expressedly charismatic. I absolutely agree with Justine. Very nice, could be perfect with just a little sharpening. |

Kavey, thanks for your input. Yes they are my oldest and youngest, the middle girl has had it with my camera!
Koriyama, thank you too, I see your point about color and age, black and white for a more subdued look.
vsmed, I will work on that one, glad you took the time. |
