Ok this may be a dumb question but I had to ask :)

I did not see this mentioned anyplace in the forum or the past free study (December).

Can the photograph submitted for this challenge come from a previous challenge or one that was posted in the forum during the month?

You can not enter a photograph to more than one challenge, from the rules: A photograph may only be used in one challenge, even if it is cropped or altered differently to fit another challenge.

Personally I don't think it meets with the spirit of the site, but is has been done by winning images before now.

A photo may only ever be submitted to a single challenge.

As for submitting one that has already been displayed publicly, there are no rules that prohibit it, but it is possible that voters may react negatively to seeing a picture they've seen before (lack of anonymity, etc.) Putting it another way, would you post your "Orange" or "Motion Blur" entry in the forums and then submit it?

Stop and think about it.

Submit your best photo taken during the month of "March"

A month is a long time. Your best photo could be one from a previous challenge or one you posted in the forum.

Going by what you are saying this is going to put a serious damper on what members want to post and discuss in the forum is it not? Thus the quality of photographic discussion could suffer. We may never see a good photo posted and discussed in the forum again, for everyone will be holding off to see if there is another free study.

Couldn't these rules do more harm than good?

Doesn't it seem the Free Study will do more harm than good to creative photographic discussion in the forum.

As I stated, there is no rule the prevents you from posting a photo in the forum and submitting it to the March Free Study. The only rule is about using a photo more than once as a challenge entry. I was merely stating an opinion that your score may suffer if people feel that they've already seen and commented on the image.

I understand what you are saying.
And I can understand not using a photo from a previous challenge.
What I find hard to understand is why members would hold it against a photographer in a "free study" for a photo that was previously displayed in the forum. I just don't see how this will help creative photographic discussion.

I ask the general members:

Would you vote down a photo in the free study for being previously posted in the forum for discussion (and not from a previous challenge)?

Yes

i dont think its something I would do since you do risk getting lower scores since it has been "seen" before. I would not vote low becaus of that, but im just 1 person, there are many voters and many would vote down the image (im just guessing) but remember the voters can be harsh.

I wouldn't vote low purely because I'd seen it before but I don't think it's in the spirit of the site to seek views on a photo which is then submitted since by doing so you are gaining some insight (albeit liminted) into the tastes of the voters. The march Free study challenge was posted at the beginning of March. It's not unreasonable to ask before you publish a photo in aforum 'will I consider entering this in the Free Study?' If the answer is yes I woudl advise holding off. There's not a free study every month so this should not inhibit creativity in my view.
