For web display borders only I use:

Single border - 0.0625 - .5" (Varies depending on the photo and size).

Multiple (Mac style):

0.125 - White
0.0625 - Black
0.5 - 0.75 - White
0.0625 - Dark Gray (Shadow for final black border)
0.25 - Black

Again the sizes will vary depending on the photo and size.

This is first time i would be making borders for printing.
To make border i follow this procedure
Procedure to Make Border
i use Photoshop 6 , i dont have facility of using option Relative in Canvas Size
So i wanted to know about aspect ration? i mean what is it.

If i want my image with border included to be of size 8x10, what i do is that i make my main image in ration of 4:5 (reason being 8x10 is in ration of 4:5)
so i make my main picture for 7.8 x 9.75, than i follow the above procedure and make final image 8x10,

I just wanted to know am i doing right

Unless you are making a square photo, increasing by a percentage will give you uneven borders. If you want an 8x10 with a 1/4" border, crop to 7.5x9.5 and then increase the canvas size to 8x10.

I only use the aspect ratio figure to decide which size print my cropped photo is closest to; then I fill out the canvas as described above (personally, I let the border be uneven, with more on the bottom, if it doesn't fit exactly).
