I want to apply a Gaussian blur along a gradient -- i.e. the top part of my image would be most blurry, the bottom part not at all blurry. I figure I must need to use a mask. I added a mask from my image and flood filled it with a gradient. Now what? Am I even going in the right direction here? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the right thing to do. Is it not doing what you want?

I just tried it in Photoshop and it worked great. Here were the steps.
1) Copy the background layer
2) Apply Gaussian Blur to that new layer
3) Add a mask to that new layer
4) Click on the mask thumbnail and select the gradient tool, then drag the mouse on the image creating a gradient in the mask

I'm using PSP X2, but close enough. That worked. I was creating a new mask from the image, and wasn't getting the effect I expected. And I couldn't get rid of the checkerboard background (there's a name for it that escapes me just now). I guess copying the raster layer and working on it is the way to go then?

I haven't worked much with masks, so thanks for your patience.

Sounds like you're getting there. Here's a tutorial I wrote on layer masks in Photoshop. I'd guess that the same concepts would apply to PSP. Instead of using a brush to select, use a gradient. Here's another tutorial that specifically addresses using gradients for blurring.

Okay, thanks to everyone. The advice and the tutorials all helped. I kept trying to use "Create mask from image" which I'm guessing is something very different.

A simple mask over a copy of the background raster layer seems to give me a lot of options.
