grigrigirl left this message on the photo before it was DQd:

Sorry folks...this image will be DQ'd. I entered this in an act of rebellion. My silence entry disturbed enough people that I thought I would keep up the sensual nature of things. I didnt think it mattered that I took the picture 3 days prior to submission dates...because I knew it wouldnt score high enough to be questioned. I was merely rebelling and trying to throw in an odd angle of portraiture. Well...the plan backfired! For the first time..i watched my score rise all week...watched the numbers stay high...and wished them to drop...but they didnt. Ive quit caring about scores. I enter these challenges for fun. I truly cant believe it did so well. I like the image...but never imagined that most everyone else would too. My bad...

Needless to say...i wont be entering untimely images anymore. Lesson learned.

As much as I like her work, I question the ethics of one who would KNOWINGLY break the rules and allow it to go to fruition. She had 7 days of recieving good scores to come clean!

My question is more whether she would have come clean to rebelling had she not placed in the top 5.

I don't. She said it in one word: "Rebellion".
And that does not need any further explanation. =)

Would be nice if dpchallenge kept all DQ pictures at the bottom of the contest. Place #999 DQ: etc

wait, I'm confused ... if someone in the top 5 got dq'd and I was number 5 ... how am I still number 5?
03/22/2004 04:32:40 PM · #11
yeah! I'm still 50th! I should be 49th, no?

I have to agree. I think her work is superb! But she should have sent a notice to the admins prior to her photo appearing on the front page. Didn't this happen before? Same deal. She knew it would win, and didn't do anything about it until after the results were posted.

That's not cool. :-(

If it didn't score in the top 5, she wouldn't of had to come clean. No harm, no foul. And she couldn't of knowin' what everybody else's score was doing...

Wrong. This is not basketball where you have three officials to make a determination as to whether the violation affects the quality of the game. Most of the "officiateing" here is on the honor system. As such we cannot afford to let the feeling that "it's OK if you don't get caught" raise it's ugly head.

That wasn't nice but I'm preety sure she's not the only one. I think maybe admins should randomly ask for proof for others too not only top5. Something like that would make cheaters think twice probably. I remember another recent case when someone seen a picture in a challenge but he also saw that pictue weeks ago on some other site. I'm sure there are also many that got away with it. I also don't like admins policy that they usualy don't show dq'd pics except when it is so obvious like this one whas. I thing the shame they will eat being exposed to everyone, will give some results.

I like the idea of random exif testing it will keep the "its only 1 day out of the challenge" and "ott ps'ers" on their toes. I think admin already have their hands full, maybe us ordinary members could become the exif police, each challenge we could pick or be offered a random image and be sent the (annonymous) original to verify?

I think a few of the members here already have concerns regaurding sending originals to the site. I don't have a problem with that, but there's no way I'm sending the original to someone random who wants to test for me.

why? I think the machine should randomly name a few to upload prooves, and ask for users to volunteer checking exif after every challenge or some sort of a system like that.

Your original file is the proof that the file is yours. If I sent you my original straight from the camera picture, and you sold the picture, I would have no way of being able to prove that in fact it was my picture.

i agree with jrs915. however, if it ever came down to proving where the pic came from, also inbeded in the exif is the camera serial number. you could prove it's your pic by owning the matching camera.

at the same time, i'm not for random testing because i don't care if someone's pic finishes 50th and i finish 100th. we both submitted average pictures.

I think they do random testing. I got a request for Conlict challenge.

I think perhaps there was a request for DQ on your shot rather than random checking.

I hate having to revisit this question every time ONE person does something 'dishonest'.
Personally, I don't think it was a big deal. I LOVE grigri's fotography. I think it's edgy and provoking as were her intentions in entering a shot outside of the dates.
If you read the explanation she left on the fotog notes, you will see that she outs herself. So whether she made the top five or not, her rebellion would have been evident to those who checked out her shot.
Let's all chill & resume our normal lives, shall we?
:)

So just because she says after everyone has voted on the shot and it has placed in the top three (ego trip?) and then says 'Oh by the way I cheated.' we're just supposed to say 'Aw that's all right, at least ya told us'? I'm sorry but that doesn't seem morally right...

If Julia should choose, what could she do to put this all behind us?

Then I would really like to know the reason of the DQ
