I was wondering if anyone could direct me to any info about how tight is too tight when attaching a tripod or quick release plate to the Nikon D300. I know it is a tank, but so is my wrist. I am worried I will over tighten the screw and strip, pullout, or crack the mounting socket.

D300 has a metal socket, right? I doubt you can crack that. But anyway on my 20D I set it "finger tight", no extra effort, then set it down an extra quarter turn, still with fingers. That's my rule of thumb: "Finger tight, then crank a quarter". Mine never come loose.
