Ok, this has bugged me for a while. In zooms that have slow, changing apertures, does shooting the widest end at the largest aperture give the same DOF as shooting the farthest end with the widest aperture (which would be "smaller" than it is at the wide end)?

So basically, on a 18-200 f/3.5-5.6, would the DOF be the same at 18mm f/3.5 as it would be at 200mm f/5.6, given you can compensate for the fact that teles have less DOF by moving farther/closer to the subject?

Does this make sense? I don't think it does :\

Not even close. Using your camera with a subject 10 feet away, 18mm f/3.5 would give you a DOF of abut 22 feet while 200mm f/5.6 would give you a DOF of 0.16ft. If you increase the distance to the subject to 20 feet, the DOF changes to infinite and 0.64 feet, respectively. Does that answer your question?

DOF calculators are handy gizmos. ;-)

If you move closer/farther away to frame the image exactly the same and hold the aperture constant, the DOF will be the same.
