Hi,

I am off to Athens tomorrow for a long weekend and was wondering what kit to take. Is it worth taking a 100-400mm lens or is it just going to be an extra kilo to carry around in 28 degree heat?

Also, same question about the tripod, not sure I will want to carry around another kilo of tripod. The light is going to be good so any reason to lug that around to? Maybe for hdr if the sky is really bright but I could just take the graduated nd filter as that weighs nothing really!!

Any suggestions about places to go

I was there earlier this month. Skip the 100-400 and take your 70-300. Although you'll probably get the most use out of the wide end of your 17-85, there are some good opportunities for a long lens, too. A tripod is not necessary unless you plan to be out at sunset or night. Polarizers are essential.

The Parthenon is covered in scaffolding, and the worn cobblestones are very slippery up there- I saw one woman break her nose on a sunny day. Don't fall victim to the taxi drivers' tour offers or you'll end up paying a lot of money for things that really don't interest you.

Best tip: contact Iraklis and try to meet up. ;-)

When I was last in Athens, a couple of years ago, I spent days in the La Placa area. Tucked in among the tourist places are ancient ruins with great shadows and shapes at certain times of day. Some of the tourist stuff is funny & photogenic too. Pretty, sometimes ancient, churches hide there as well. The adjacent local marketplace is fun in the morning with acres of implements, food, butcher sheds, etc. Then, the ruins of the Agora, fairly near by, under the Parthenon, has so much to offer that I spent a bunch of time there too. I just attached the 28-300 and polarizer and left everything else back at the hotel.

If you like walking try this.
Go to Sintagma square, Beside the parliament stands the King's Garden, and the monument of Zeus (stiles Olimpiou Dios) You can have a drink in the Aigli Restaurant inside the Garden, full view of Acropoles, which looks fascinating due to the lighting if its dark! Then cross the Panepistimiou street and find the way to Plaka , thision etc.... You will love it! You can swim in Greece this time of the season!!
