I've twiddled & googled and even read the manual but I cannot find out how to take successive frames with a flash. I know the d300 has something called repeating flash which is supposed to do it while the shutter is open but I can't get that to work either.
I have a D300 & 2 x SB600 - does anyone know how to achieve either a burst with flash on each shot (preferable) or a burst of flashes while in bulb, either way would be good to know. |

I have done that with an SB800 flashes and Nikon D200 camera.
I did about 9 flashes with a long exposure. It might have been about 15-30 seconds.
The instructions were in the SB800 flash manual. |

I haven't tried it with a SB-600, but to get the flash to fire repeatedly when you're shooting in burst mode, the flash is going to have to be firing at fairly low power, maybe 1/16 or 1/32. Otherwise, there won't be enough power for successive shots. I've done this with my SB-28 in manual mode, but I haven't tried it with my SB-600, and I can't find the manual, so I don't really know what's possible with an SB-600. I'd think you would probably have better luck at 3 fps than 6, though.
ralph's right, the SB-600 won't strobe on a single shot. You'll need a SB-800 (or a SB-28 in manual mode) for that. |

there is a repeating for BUILT IN flash under menu e3. Not sure it will do what you want, though

thnx for the replies and I will try some of this but I first have to get past another small problem.....
There is a delay when I use flash that is not there when I don't use flash. I have tried turning off a lot of different settings but it makes no difference.
The pop-up flash just sits there while the AF illuminator flashes a few times then fires.
If I put the sb600 on the hot-shoe then the AF illuminator doesn't flash but the sb600 does a series of pre-flashes before opening the shutter
I have tried the following:
* turning off AF illuminator assist
* turning off anything with the word delay or timer in it
..and yes it is set to manual focus & single shot......any suggestions? |

Found it!!!!!!!!!!!
Red-eye reduction was turned on (by accident I might add cuz I never use it) |

I just read this, but I went through the same thing on my D200, red-eye reduction. If you hold the SB-600 up and off to the side you don't have to worry about red-eye. Or use an attachment for bounced flash.
Repeating Flash mode on the SB-800 flash is for a long exposure of a single frame AFAIK as far as I know. On-Camera repeating flash, I don't know about.
A good investment for successive SB-800/SB-600 Flash units is a Quantum battery pack. I use the Turbo-2. At full power it recycles in 1.7 seconds, up to 700 flashes on a 2-hour charge. At 1/4 power you should be able to do 4 fps.
The Turbo x2 can power one flash and you camera, all day long.
