Sorry to bother all you experts out there. But I need some advise. I am in possession of a Sigma 170-500mm APO DG lens and a Tamron 200-500mm DI LD lens. My ex is selling her Canon dslr along with a lens. I get to choose which lens she sells with the camera and which one I get to keep for my own camera. So which is better overall? and if not too much to ask for... why?

Keep the Tamron and ditch the Sigma. The Tammy is SP which is their better glass. It cost more and all the user reviews of the Sigma start with "For the money you can't complain..." tells me it's budget glass. I can find formal reviews for the Tammy but none for the Sigma 170-500mm.

I have shot the Tammy 200-400mm (mom has one) at airshows and parks and zoos and what not. Excellent in the 200-400 range and very in the 400-500 range (tripod/monopod for sharp pics in that range. It's big (long) at 500mm but it is light. Handholding is quite doable.

Really can't comment on the siggy but the (honest) user reviews were not favorable.

I'd take the 100-400mm L IS...oh wait not part of the bargin...

ED: Typo

Thanks for the response. I appreciate your help. I was hoping to get a few pros and cons about both lenses, from several people. But I can't seem to find any actual "comparisons" anywhere. I don't know much of anything about photography, so any other sources you can recommend would be great. Once again... thanks.

I have no experience with either of these lenses, but you can find the owners at DPC though the equipment drop down menu. Send them a pm, surely some of them will share their experiences with you.
